A mtb list i'm on has a periodic 'fat club' - very similar to the flying 200 challenge. Post your weight, and your goal weight, and there's a weekly weigh-in to keep people on the straight and narrow.

True, that. But unless you are very low fat, and/ or eating badly for the training & recovery you do, its mostly fat.

Hopefully the people doing the long distances, in the context of this list, that could result in the body consuming muscle, are doing the right fueling to prevent it.

And some people come to roadie/enduro-land from other sports and, while the biceps are good for getting the ladies, they're not all that helpful for pedaling a bike in that style.

Hi!

New to this track racing lark, just started with some SQTs last year at my local outdoor velodrome. Did a 13.2 f200 on a rickety hire bike with 84" gear. According to the spreadsheet I am aiming for a 12.72. I should get my new track bike next week and have my licence accreditation at Manc velodrome tonight.
I am completely new to track (I had done a couple of 'taster sessions') racing and can't wait for my sumer season to start!
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I will not even post my time for two reasons. Racing at 400m Outdoor Bumpy Kissena Track will never allow anyone to set anytype of competitive time. On the other hand my one and only Flying 200m at Trexlertown -333m was a second better, but it was an experience of feeling the force in the turns and keeping my line.
I know I'm old and slow but a nice banked track makes a difference.

Keep things relative. We all know that different tracks have different handicaps.

Kissena is your home track. This is where you will do most of your work and it will be the first place you see your gains. So, maybe define your baseline and target times as "Kissena Times" and measure those.

The sprinters who race in Colorado Springs have the same problem, yet inverse. They race at altitude and generally run 0.5" faster than at sea-level. When they travel, their times are slower.

don't see it being too hard if I actually do any speed work this year. I'm a lot stronger than I was last year! Just haven't had much bike time due to getting really sick in november then getting hit by a car in december.

I'd say just do it. We know you're old, we know you race at Kissena (I know well how the sprint lane isn't even on the banking; I know that dip in the sprint lane in turn 4, right where you're at top speed in a sprint!).

This is a no judgement zone - all based on encouragement and improvement, not on relative merit.

Thanks, I just have to do some homework and pull the time out of the archives. When we had the States in September and it was at Kissena we skipped the 200m to rank us for the Match Sprints since we were losing day light. i'll find it and I do understand all the positive comments.

Took me some time to find it, but on June 9 2013 I was at a wopping 15.71.
Okay don't laugh but let me put things in perspective.
That night the fastest Cat 3 (cat 2 on the road) was 12.71. One other was in the 13+ range. Everyone else was in the 14-15 range.

Tough on low banked 400M track as you can't even get a good wind up. I also think that in our season we did only 1 flying 200, it's tough when we race one night a week.

For what it's worth I did a 14.40 at T-town on my first race ever there and I was high on the 3-4 turns.

My goal at Kissena for 2014? Hmmm, 14.70, and maybe a 14.10at T-town?

Don't fret.

How many flying 200s have you ever done? They get better with practice. I've seen people with high F200M times take off full seconds when they do their windup differently.

I may do a road trip this summer to try some other tracks as I can not get to T-town on the weekend and as a Cat 4 I am not allowed to race there during the weekday schedule. I am sure that I will never get to Cat 3 not simply because of my ability, but because of lack of races at Kissena.
OK. You haven't got the technique down yet. Don't worry. Your legs are much faster than 15.71"!!

To put things into perspective, many riders will do 3 or 6 flying 200 type efforts as part of their daily WARMUP! Here's a typical warmup:

- 20-30 lap paceline (depending on track length)
- Fully Seated flying 100M with a 3 lap windup at the top of the boards.
- Standing (meaning jump out of the saddle) flying 100M with a 3 lap windup at the top of the boards.
- Flying 100M or Flying 200M with a 3 lap windup at the top of the boards.
- (some repeat the seated, standing, flying efforts again)
- Then proceed with the race day events.

That's for everyone at the track.

Sprinters will entire days where they might do 5-10 Flying 100M and/or Flying 200M efforts on various gears with varying windups.

The flying 200M is a mix of power, speed, and technique with a bit of power-endurance. The technique is very important. It can be compared to let's say, the high jump in track & field (athletics). In that event, a person can be as strong, fast, fit, light as possible, but if they don't land the technique, they will achieve nowhere near their potential.

Notice that this event also has "windups" and "jump spots" which are crucial to maximize the effort:

Skip to the 1:00 mark in this video and you can see how the athlete instructs the newbie. Flying 200M instruction is very similar.
