2014 Flying 200m Challenge

so its early December and most of us have finished racing 2013 and we are making plans for a faster new year!

I thought i would present a challenge to you guys, to get you pumped and training for next year!

The "2014 Flying 200m Challenge" is a simple handicapped contest that will allow us to compete against each other- by fighting for our own new personal best time

The link below has a calculator to give you your Goal Time for this Challenge. Simply type your current PR Flying 200m time in the yellow box and it calculates your goal time for this contest. First rider to hit their goal time in 2014 is the winner!

So if you are in- reply with your current PR and your calculator generated Goal for 2014..

To win, your results must be available in a link-able Race Result... or at least a picture you took of the results at a race... so no self timed results from training sessions..

11.83 means 11.56 goal.

Aww yisss. I have high hopes.

So far the only timed F200M I've done since then is during the off season... in a warm up gear (81gi) and at the end of a flying lap.. Result was much slower, but my leg speed already seems to be much faster than last season. Yay for having a real training plan.

YOU GOT THIS.

Also I think I could cheat, because my PR was done in an outdoor 333m. If I went indoor or did it at altitude, I think I could shave some time off of that? Not quite sure how that works.

Quinn, how did you arrive at the formula to calculate this?

you never know- i think ADT rides slower than you think.. at Nats in Indy i was riding about the same times as adt. Now Manchester- i hear that's a fast one!!

the formula was just a random formula that yielded a relevant result... it seamed to work well across fast times and slower times..

My best time is on an outdoor 400. Altitude will make you faster, though.

my 200 in the sprints at Indy was my first and only 200 on a 333… i got a couple practice wind-ups on the morning of- nothing longer than about 100m/at 80%.. i rode the whole thing based on directions from my coach over the phone..

went pretty well- other than getting low in 3/4 and smacking a sponge! then shooting up to the blue(as i mentally prepared to meet the pavement with my face) before realizing that i needed to GO! still qualified 2nd

200 on a 333 is weird. With the conventional line you only get assitance from the banking for 5-10 meters max before the 200 start line, so it seems obvious you won't be near your peak speed there. Very different from a 250 or 400 where you get basically a full drop from the rail accellerating before you hit the start line. I still haven't figured out how to do a good 200 at Hellyer, and I'm thinking about playing with the line a bit, e.g., starting the drop earlier than most people do to take advantage of the banking.

that line was being discussed at Indy. When you stand at the rail and check it- it appears to make sense. You would be taking advantage of the steepest part of the track. In the end i heard from Roger Young (who ran that track for years) that was not the line- as well as what i was hearing from my coach.. not to say its not worth trying- i just wasn't willing to risk it on my only shot!

one technique i tried for the first time at indy- but have since adopted at ADT (for the first time in my PR last month) is to stand when you enter turn-3 on your wind-up. this helps you keep speed as you roll over the steep transition. You stay standing- but ride through 3/4 and jump at your normal pace/time.. Ive heard Lakatosh refer to it as "pulling the spring back".. something about creating tension to release at the jump..

Looks like I'm shooting for sub 12 on our very slow, weirdly shaped track. It's a good goal.

Hmm. If only I could remember my PR. I think it's 12.05? Or was it 12.5? I should remember this. Well, the calculator is asking me to either get to 11.74 or 12.13. Maybe if I do more than one flying 200 a year it'll improve! Especially (hopefully) given the weight work I'm doing in my spider-filled basement.

this is false. Our track is.... odd. 400m works out to about 27d banks (if memory serves), so doing a 200 involves coming out of T2 hard, usually trying to hit tangent at T3, then hold black all the way in.

The track doesn't try to throw you up at all.... super-odd compared to "legit" steep tracks.
So, if you've got flat land speed, who knows? Generally though, don't expect much for time at Marymoor.

Also, there should be some gathering when folks come this way for the Marymoor GP / Nationals.


As for my 200 time, I've never done one - but I guess I may as well?

My actual time was a 11.83, but it was a super hot day and the air was calm.

Not sure why it says Alpenrose velodrome challenge? Hahaha this was at States (Hellyer)
