New additions to your bike

With the holidays upon us, I figured a thread like this might be started soon enough. And since Santa showed up today, I couldn't wait to share. Family and I were out enjoying the 70* weather. We come home and there's a package at the door. And in it is my new Dura Ace track crank and BB-7710 bottom bracket. :D The bike is just about ready. I just need to get a wheelset and tires. Can't wait for 2014!!!!

Nice Pantani. I have been happy with the FSA carbon crank that came on my first track bike, but I will likely upgrade to Dura Ace eventually (dreams of a Stages power meter pushing me further in that direction).

I had been scrounging all the usual sources for a used rear disc wheel for quite some time. Last month, my wife surprised me with this for my birthday:

Awesome wife (mine scored me my Tiemeyer)! I've been wheel shopping as well. Probably going to pick up a new Mavic Ellipse or Deep V/Dura Ace wheelset, unless something else used pops up. I'm just jealous of your Zipps. :)

I really like the Ellipse as a combo training/race wheel, ESPECIALLY for new racers.

The Ellipse weigh about the same a typical DeepV wheelset, but use 20 bladed spokes which comes out pretty aero. I set a PB (at the time) for my flying 200M on a set of Ellipse. Plus they are very strong. I rode a set of Ellipse on a commuter fixed gear on the rough streets of Baltimore for almost a year.

The only down side is the "campy" threaded lockring. So standard Dura Ace lock rings won't work.

I don't think there is a significant advantage to using Dura Ace loose ball hubs over quality sealed bearing hubs. The sealed bearing hubs don't need maintenance (cleaning, greasing, repacking) like the DA do. Also, DA hubs tend to "self-tighten" on the rear after a long time. This results in bearings being too tight. You'll need cone wrenches to adjust. Not a big deal, but that's part of owning them.

Funny! I have never, in 3 years of riding different sets, had that issue with the DA hubs.

I did however have it so bad on the mavic ellipses that i ended up just throwing them away..

I also have not experienced this self tightening DA phenomenon. But Carleton is a hell of a lot burlier than me.

It's a function of the washers on the bolts. If they stiffen up, then they allow the axle to turn when tightening the wheel, thus spinning the cone nuts tighter.

You simply won't have this problem with sealed bearings.

i'm tempted to dump my campagnolo cranks for these but i wouldn't use it for actual training but to look over race data. so i lose the motivation to rehaul my drivetrain.

I've actually been planning on the Ellipse based on prior conversations we've had. Mentioned the Deep V's just because they came up recently. Bummed about the DA lock rings since I just bought 2 of them. Doh!

Not for the bike, but for me.
