Track Orientation Classes

Use this thread to post track orientation classes.

We were all track newbies once. I know plenty of people that try the track at 30+, 40+, and 50+. What's keeping you?

Also, many tracks recognize certifications from other tracks.

For anyone who is in the UK (like myself), Manchester runs different types of taster sessions, skills sessions and training nights. I don't know if Newport (Wales) run these type of sessions...
https://www.nationalcyclingcentre.com...ide-the-track/ - Different types of taster session.
https://www.nationalcyclingcentre.com/track/timetable/ - Time table, tasters are held everyday.

Bikes and helmets provided, but if you're a rider with your own kit I believe you can take your own pedals/shoes/helmet.
For anyone interested, they hold MTB and BMX sessions too.

Hellyer Velodrome - San Jose, CA - Saturday beginner sessions... https://www.ridethetrack.com/schedule/saturday-novice/

These occur every Saturday morning and offer rental bikes. See the link above for details. Typically, 3 beginner sessions are required before one can attend an open session or race. Many cyclists use the Saturday morning sessions as a workout and come every Saturday but do not race.

I was one of those that came to DLV for my certification and since I was already signed up for the classes at Giordana I took those too. The DLV classes were great and I learned a ton. Actually thought about signing up to take the class before this season. Nice excuse to go to DLV.

Sir Chris Hoy velodrome in Glasgow, it is a 4 stage process to gain accreditation (which then allows you to go to track drop ins, training sessions and racing).

https://www.emiratesarena.co.uk/velod...ew-riders.aspx

The price includes bike, shoe and helmet hire if needed

01 | INTRODUCTION TO TRACK CYCLING - 1 hour

This is the first step for anyone who wants to ride a fixed gear bike on a banked velodrome and as such is the first part of the accreditation process. The coach will take riders through a check list of skills necessary to allow the rider to enter the track and ride on the banked surface safely. If you can peform the skills satisfactorily you will be eligible to progress to the next stage of rider accreditation. If the rider does not perform the required skills or booked only to try they can book as many introductory sessions as they wish.

Adult £10.20 / Conc/Junior £7.15

02 | IMPROVE YOUR TRACK SKILLS - 1 hour

The second of the four accreditation sessions is designed to move the rider into group riding on the track and allows them to become more independent. Again the coach will require the rider to demonstrate a series of skills including those listed in the introduction session before moving on to the next step.

Skills covered will include accelerating in and out of the saddle and completing a track tour.

Adult £10.20 / Conc/Junior £7.15
03 | PREPARATION FOR ACCREDITATION - 2 hours

Advanced skills are taught in this session and the rider must demonstrate a certain level of fitness, 30 minutes riding with a group. Skills included in this session include riding in close proximity to other riders and an Italian pursuit race.

Adult £25.00 / Conc/Junior £15.00

04 | ACCREDITATION - 2 hours

This is the minimum required to allow riders to take part in open sessions, structured training, competition, bunch races and track leagues. The accreditation allows riders to access London, Manchester, Meadowbank and Newport velodromes. An accredited rider will receive a registered rider card.

All skills listed in previous sessions must be demonstrated to the coach who will assess whether a rider is safe to enter the track as an accredited rider, capable of entering structured training and competition.

Adult £25.00 / Conc/Junior £15.00

I did my first track class at Kessina in NYC. It's very shallow and easy to get around. The staff members are excellent and made the day a blast.

Portland Oregon area

Track classes will be held at Alpenrose Velodrome starting in April, exact date will be determined by the weather. Classes will be held on Wed evenings, cost is $10, you will need to bring bike shoes/or tennis shoes, pedals, helmet, water, cost includes a track bike and the class. Contact Meg via email or check the link in early April for more info. I'm 60, and looking forward to this, age is no excuse.

Forest City Velodrome in London, Ontario, about 2hours from Detroit or Buffalo.

Intro classes are every saturday and sunday through the winter. We get everything from people who can hardly ride a bike to pro/cat1 racers taking our intro classes. We also do many skills sessions throughout the week.

2014 "Try the Track" at T-town

Here's the 2014 schedule for the intro "Try the Track" class held at Valley Preferred Cycling Center in Trexlertown, PA (T-town).

5/18/14, 6/22/14, 8/24/14 - all dates are Sundays - time is 9AM - 1PM

https://www.thevelodrome.com/communit...try-the-track/

I took the class last August and highly recommend it. A great staff on hand to bring you up to speed (both literally and figuratively!). I got hooked, and now will be doing the Sat. afternoon Rookies & Masters races this coming season.

Thanks for that. I'll mark my calendar. Will I meet any of you guys there? It/they will be my first time(s).

I see Kissena has added clinics to the calendar, too. They are on April 13 and May 4. The "Twilight Series" of races is also announced: 6:30 on Wednesdays from April 23 through August 27th. Good thing my Wednesday evenings are free.

Does anyone use Kissena? I'm getting excited thinking about this. I never saw myself as playing this role, so it's good to step out of myself and give this a try.

My club had an orientation day at VSC today. Great turnout with close to 40 people! Probably 2/3 had never been to a track before, so very basic stuff... but hopefully it lit a few fires. Half the group:

I signed up for the April month-long session of Thursdays. I got a little excited a few weeks ago between ice storms and signed up. Missed the group-on..
