My first track bike came with the ever-popular Deda Pista (42cm c-to-c). Coming from road, these were of course very natural to me. It was only after much chiding that I tried narrower bars. Going to Nitto 125 (36cm) was nothing short of a revelation. I've kept an eye out for a set of those Alpinas, but only half-heartedly as I'm super happy with the 125s. I've even considered them for my road bikes... I'd like to get those at least down to 38cm.

For the new racers:

In your orientation classes, you may wonder why your instructor will say, "If there is wreck in front of you, always try to go UP track."

Here's a great example why. At the 20 second mark, watch the last two riders. One goes up and the other goes down with different results.

I think she just got beat. Secondly, if you've ever tried to follow then pass a small rider like Vogel, you'll know that you don't get much of any aero benefit from being in their small slipstream.

Being small is sort of a double advantage in sprinting. You greatly benefit from the larger rider's slipstream and you offer them a smaller slipstream.

I'd like to see how Zhong won the first round.

I just came on to say how great the women sprint final was. But of course Carleton got it first. Vogel was tactically amazing in both rides.

Zhong didn't win either final rides. The yellow box on the names indicated she was sprinting with a warning already, I think.

I was out of town racing, just catching up now, but Twitter said that predictable couple had won, and now it seems that DeBuyst has truly had a bad week.

Tainshi came off dead wheels both times. She was late reacting during the first ride and Vogel hung her out on her hip. The second ride, I think Tainshi got the timing very wrong; Vogel might have helped by executing a "building" type sprint, gradually accelerating as the trailing rider is trying to time up the pass.

I've always heard that Pervis isn't much of a tactial rider, and watching the gold medal sprints I didn't see much. Do others think that's the case?

They said the same thing about Hoy when he started on the World scene. He got better.

Botticher was tactically better than Pervis, sometimes there's just no answer to a 71km/h sprint

I think Pervis has been doing World Cups and Championships for quite a while, no? Perhaps he's just been more of a kilo specialist up to now. What an animal!

Anybody happen to hear Brian Cookson's interview during the coverage? He referenced Chris Hoy's 2004 Olympic kilo ride as a particularly rad moment. Kilo back to the Olympics???? It certainly has not died as an event as some predicted it would a few years ago.

Carleton, just to share on your comment about crashing... Since I did take my Certification course at your former home track, I remember Brian telling us when there is a crash to go high. Why? Because a track is self cleaning. haha!!! Everything will funnel downhill. Of course, in a tight pack like that, it's just hard to avoid when you're the next guy in line. I just always like the self cleaning reference.

What a nightmare. And horrible that when the lead cyclist when highi it looks like Aravena attempted to go low when she saw the gate still there but lo and behold the d-bags are taking their sweet a** time getting off the track and she swerved back up to avoid them. I wish she would have plowed into them. What the ____ was that???? Hopefully she's able to recover from that, though it will be a long recovery.

To bring a bit more insight to the situation: Even though this was a big event and the officials are trained and experienced, guys like the gate handlers are likely unpaid volunteers. I don't think they have to be UCI Certified to help, only the officials have to be UCI Certified.

I think that they were more untrained and inexperienced than purposefully negligent.
