I did so/so. I think its one of the first Thanksgivings I didn't "go turkey wild"....I didn't overeat too badly and stayed away from "most" bad things (didn't eat any desserts).

My bigger problem was being so busy, I didn't ride all week...not since last Sunday. Gotta get back in the saddle!

Sounds like we're in the same boat. I've only been on the trainer the last 3 days, no real road miles. At least we didn't load up on calories, right? I like commuting by bike to work, I always have time to ride.

Sounds like most of us, (who have posted) did ok for Thanksgiving. I didn't go hot wild either. The one really really really bad thing I had was pecan pie. Its a family tradition. I'm from Texas and we used to make it from pecans from the tree in the back yard. Now, I have to purchase them in a store. Not quite as much fun, but I'm keeping the tradition as best I can. I've now lost all but 1lb of the water weight I picked up.

Now, its time to look forward. I'll be riding the Death Valley Century on March 8th. I hope to be sub-200lbs by then. Plus lots of trainer and roller time. Winter looks to be harsh this year. We're already sub-zero and over 3 feet of snow on the ground.

I'll be sooooooo ready to go to Death Valley, CA. in March!

    Ritz,
Good question. We moved to Montana when I was a kid in second grade. Mom was a manager for the Army Air Force Exchange Service. Back in 1974 she was transferred to Malmstrom AFB here. My mom has since retired and moved back to Killeen.

Why am I still in Montana? Well, I've built a decent life here. Or perhaps its a comfort zone thing. I'd love to move back to Texas. Or perhaps Arizona. Must be a comfort zone thing. Starting over from scratch just does not sound that appealing.

That makes sense. I hear Montana's beautiful anyway. 10 to 1 says you don't have as much pollution or traffic there either! Peace, and take in a big ol' lungful of fresh mountain air for me. Ritz.

    Hey everyone,

I have been reading these posts for a while and thought it was time to chime in. I started working out again about 6 weeks ago in a new gym by my house. When I started I was right around 250lbs and this morning I was 233lbs. My original goal was to lose 20lbs by Christmas and that looks like it will happen but I would like to get down below 210lbs by March or so(I'm setting some shorter term goals that way I can hopefully meet them). So far I am working out with a personal trainer 2x's a week on weights and doing cardio in there(ellipical, treadmill, track, bike) for 45minutes to an hour 4-7 times a week. I just got my bike tuned up and I am hoping that the weather will let me take a nice ride either Saturday or Sunday. I use to race mountain bikes back in the early 90's and I am thinking that I may try to do a couple of races in the spring if I can get in good enough shape.

I haven't read the entire thread, but clearly I'm in the right weight category to throw in my 2 cents. Continually fighting my weight. I began doing a lot of cardio type exercise (5-6 times/week) and definitely lost some weight. I didn't do much adjustment to my diet/drinking, but the weight still came off - albeit too slow for me. A couple friends recommended weight training. I was initially hesitant since I figured that would just add weight if I bulked up.

I couldn't have been more wrong. Weight training along with Cardio is the only way to go (diet control will help a lot too). It was explained to me that while doing a cardio workout, you will burn calories for precisely the amount of time you are working out. Then it stops. If you lift weights and add muscle, you will be burning substantially more calories throughout the day especially during the most important weight loss time of day - sleep. A muscular body will burn more calories even while you are sleeping.

If you're trying to lose weight and not lifting some weight you are short changing yourself.

I haven't posted here in a while, but wanted to give an update on my progress:

I started in March at 389 ... my highest weigh-in ever. I have dropped down to 364 after a few ups and downs. I am weight training three days a week, and getting in some kind of cardio (indoor bike ride, walk, etc.) three to four times a week. I have altered my diet considerably, usually beginning the day with a protein drink (protein powder, milk, frozen fruit ... all blended). I eat a healthy but hearty lunch, then a lighter dinner. Between lunch and dinner, I may have a protein shake or a sleeve of almonds. I am trying not to eat anything after dinner, which I admit is killing me. If I do have something, I try to make it healthy, like fruit.

*sigh* If I said I was enjoying myself, I would be stretching the truth a bit. I *love* to eat, which is why I look like this. However, I am enjoying the new energy I have, and I am enjoying riding on the trainer ... it's giving me a chance to watch DVDs that sat on the shelf for months. I have a projector set up, so it's like I am riding in a movie theater.

Anyway, that's the update. Good job to all of you who continue the battle ... it's worth it! Merry Christmas all ... see ya soon!

Let me tell you what has been working for me. I was about your size (starting was probably around 370 or so) and I *love* to eat too.

Somebody on the forum mentioned a book "Eat To Live". It's not a diet per se, but changing the way you eat. I've been getting better and better and because I'm eating healthier things I'm not putting in as many calories. Between that AND the cycling, I'm down to about 315 right now.

Granted I've still had a few ups and downs, but it has certainly been more down than up and I don't feel like I'm missing out food-wise.

Since you live in the same state, have you attended any of the Hammer camps?

That's excellent news, especially at this time of year. Congratulations!

I only wish that I were able to say the same thing. Unfortunately, me and Christmas cookies get along a little too well.

I posted in here last year around april or so. When the weather was starting to get nice enough to bike to school (when I was still a warm weather suck that is). I said that I felt like I was getting in shape from the cycling.
Well let me tell you. I have been riding constantly since then and am still riding into the frozen snowy winter of Toronto. I have lost so much fat many people I used to know from my old school and anything over a year ago bearly recognize me. I feel so great when I see old pictures of myself and then compare them to how I look now. I look like a completely different person now.
All the thanks go to that miraculouse invention the bike. I'm starting running (because I'm going to be an Canadain forces reserve medic so i can eventually become a SAR tech) and I've been doing some wheight lifting for the past month or so.
The bike has been the catalyst for this change of lifestyle. In one year (slightly less actually) I've gone from the bottom to the top of the fitness pile.
    I feel flippin fantastic.
    Good luck to all.

    Great news david.l.k

Well.....I was worried about Turkey Day damage, but seemed to fare ok. I only gained about about 2 pounds (314 to about 316), then have managed to drop that back off and hit the next low at 310 right now.

Of course...yesterday was our work Xmas party and I did indulge about 3 cookies or so as well as "eating well". Not to mention my bike is "out of commission" for about a week due to a wheel problem (and LBS having to order a replacement)....then family Christmas next week. I hope I can make it through the next week or so without gaining more than 3 or 4 pounds.

Thanks guys! I am pretty excited about the results so far. September 29th I was 232. Now I'm 213lbs. It almost makes me think my goal of 180lbs by August 24, 2006 is attainable!

    David.i.k
Don't ya just love what cycling can do for you while having so much fun?

    K.T.
You can do it! Just say NO to those holiday party snacks! I know its not easy, but your worth the effort.

My Christmas gift to myself is to maintain my dietary regiment. It is working and I don't want to mess that up.

I just started my current weight loss program the last week of October after hitting about 210 lbs and dropped to 189 lbs yesterday. I am 59 (6ft tall) and commuted to work (6 miles each way) on a bike for about 21 years from Aug 1979 to Oct 2000 before I retired at 55 in 2001. Back in 1979 I hit 210 also and by April 1981 my lowest weight was about 150 lbs but I could not keep it off and was back to 190 by 1988. My goal is 169 lbs by my 60th birthday next September and I feel I have a good chance because it is priority #1 in my life because my health was going downhill fast.
I average four one hour bike rides a week even when its 20 degrees out and just started weight training . I am on a low fat diet with very little meat ( maybe once a week) but have fish just like 25 years ago when I lost 60 lbs in 18 months. My intermediate goal is 179 by early spring and I plan to reward myself with a new bike ( Gary Fisher Cobia 29ER) .

    OK, I have a question ...

ZIN, when did you start your drop from 340? Sooooo many people report such drastic results in such a short amount of time that I get a bit depressed. I am losing about a pound or two a week, but I have to admit ... I am *not* killing myself to do this. I weight train three days a week and ride 3-4 days a week. My diet is better, but still not the kind of diet uber-skinny people have. I know myself, and I know if I restrict myself to carrots and grass, I will binge and not have success. Am I taking the wrong approach?
