mentally effect heart rate?
can you mentally effect your heart rate by thinking about your HR? The reason I ask is now that I have some miles on my polar 520, I have noticed that my HR ranges from 150-170 at a contant speed on the same strecth of my route with no noticable wind. And what is interesting is that if I am paying attention to the HR it will be higher (160-170) but if I am just riding and not watching my HR and I just glance at it, my HR will be lower (150-160). If I sing to myself (or take my mind off of my HR) it will go down 5bpm or so.
(I do not know if it is effect or affect, so do not bug me about it.)
Thanks for you thoughts...

Rats have been trained to vary their heart rates from 40% to 150%+ of normal in response to non noxious stimuli. Humans are at least as trainable as rats. :-)

When I stare at my HRM instead of paying attention to breathing my HR goes up. If I breath in really deep I can drop my HR about 5-10 BPM...usually what I do when it hits my upper limit.

I've seen a buddhist monk mentally stop his heart beating for a while in a TV talk show once. Confirmed by a doctor with his finger on the monk's pulse. Not a clue if it was for real. Looked like a proper monk though: a friendly bold fellow in red Buddhist cloak. No, it was not on Fox or MTV JackAss. And yes, he lived.

You're right, but when you are unconscious it's hard to read it. I just want slvoid's bike.
