I too have been experiencing a pain of sorts in the "small" of my back, and a bit higher. It's not really pain yet. Just stiffness at this point. I have already gone to the Chiropractor and my Massage therapist. Whatever it is it has taken up residence, and has decided to stay.
I've had a good look around the forum to get some ideas on how to deal with this problem. I don't want to stop riding again. I like it!
I got some advice from here that perhaps my set-up isn't quite right for me. I'm going to raise the height of my handlebars a couple of inches. I went with a different angled stem to try and get a more upright position. I think I may need a bit more height. I'm not very flexible and I'm having a rough time keeping my sitting bones in a comfortable spot on the seat.
I have a BG Comfort saddle from Specialized on my Kona Smoke. When I first got it I thought it would be "comfy" due to the softness of it. Big Mistake. I've read here that a seat should be like a foot orthotic. It's all about support, not padding.
I want to try a change of saddle too. I think I've been holding myself in some contorted position trying to keep myself seated on the saddle the way I think I should be. It doesn't feel very natural, that's for sure. I don't think you should have to work that hard to get comfortable. The Brooks saddles are highly touted, but my prostate whistles at me far too often these days, and it is not a happy tune. I don't know if I could survive the break in period. I really liked the Champion, if I was going for a more horizontal riding position. The springs might prevent some jarring of the spine.
I've heard there's a Brooks saddle with a opening of sorts that's cut in the centre of it to keep you from feeling "impotent". It isn't in the Brooks site though. It must be an aftermarket thing. It sounds like a great idea. I wonder what the durability is like after taking out the centre part of the saddle like that? I wouldn't even know what words to use for a Google search. Anyone know where this site is?
Ultimately I've been lazy. I'm not as active as I use to be (I've turned into an information junkie. I spend too much time surfing!). I've gained 20 pounds, and I was already 20 pounds too heavy. When I was doing my upper body work and my Pilates (for Dummies!) video tape, every other day I had no pain, and no problems. I don't mean to poo poo Crunkologists words of wisdom because, I agree with him whole heartedly, but the video was great and showed you how to do the exercise in a way that no book ever could.
I guess if I want to continue to ride, even the miniscule distances I do, I'm going to have to do the work.
