"sports" hernia, tearing lower abs
Hello. I just wondered if others have experience this. I have been super consistent with doing 2 or 3 group fitness classes at the gym that include lots of core work, ab exercises, oblique twists, hip flexor work, etc...
In the past I really got a great benefit from all of this that translated in much improved enjoyment of cycling. I have already had 2 inguinal hernia surgeries and went back to my surgeon and he says I have not suffered a recurrence of an inguinal hernia, so this is not a "true" hernia. He did refer to it as a sports hernia, apparently a layman's term. Apparently what I have is like a stage 2 tendonosis of the lower abs, adductor, hip flexor area. My left lower abs have an intermittent tearing sensation that when I make certain motions, the pain goes through the roof. I'm backing way off of all the gym workouts for now, and may try a few bike rides at lower intensity to see how things go.
I'll be 55 years old this month BTW. I was just wondered if others have suffered such harsh abdominal tears that were so bad they couldn't ride.
Thanks, for any help, from Bill.

Inguinal hernia
Hi. I just saw your posting about a hernia and thought I'd post my own experience. I've had a double hernia since last October and have been afraid to even get on a bike. I had no idea whether it would be dangerous and have been very skittish about even trying to ride. I summoned my courage and gave it a shot today and it went fine. Since it was my first ride this year, my derriere hurt after a few miles and my arthritic arm was good for only about 4 miles or so- but, at least, my hernia didn't cause any pain. I plan to have my hernia repaired in a few months but wanted to ride in the meanwhile. A couple of days ago I tried a stationary bike in the gym and that went well and gave me the idea that a trail ride would work out well. It did.

Bump -
I just wanted to give an update. I have been biking outdoors all season. Mileage is over 3700 miles. Sports hernia is still there. I'm beginning to worry if it will become permanent. The riding miles are bittersweet. I've become stronger, yes. The problem is that the increase in strength doesn't overcome my lower abdominal weakness. When riders on group rides accelerate hard out of turns or attack on rolling terrain, all I can muster is a gradual build up of speed. Often this leads to me having to get dropped or work extra hard to re-join the group. Every now & then I'll have a better day where I'm able to attack more & set the tempo for others but this has been random. I hate to mothball my riding season to force this thing to heal through complete rest. If I go gentle I don't seem to be doing any extra damage & I appear to be maintaining my current level of fitness or improving certain things that gives me a work around for this knarly scarred tendon situation. To get better but be unable to enjoy the fruits of your labor more fully is extremely humbling.
