As someone who also has a taste for crab cakes...
Yes, they are "bad" for you. Basically you are dealing with a heap of mayonaise, egg, and presumably crab meat (preferably big lumps), all cooked in oil or butter. Recipes vary a lot.
The crab has cholestrol and there is fat in the other stuff. In moderation, there is nothing wrong with crabs and crab cakes. In fact, it would not be the summer (in my mind) unless one attends an outdoor crab feast and drinks beer.

Bad of course. Only eat them when soft shells aren't in season!

It all depends on how many you eat. How many per day are we talking about here? And are you overweight already?
If they are fried in olive oil, that would be one kind of damage control.

Why not make your own? Then you could put healthy stuff in them, the commercial ones tend to have all kinds of cheap fillers.

just ate crabbie patties for dinner...here's my recipe....
3 slices of whole wheat bread, soaked in water and squeezed dry
1 # jumbo lump crabmeat
1/2 tsp dill
twist of fresh cracked pepper
pinch salt
2 eggs, lightly mixed
mix all together real well and form into patties ( I make 6)
saute until crispy in olive oil or butter (I like butter, but just a little)
you can add fresh basil or oregano or tarragon as your tastes suit..also don't be afraid to put a dash or 6 of tabasco if you're so inclined
