Couldn't get my heart rate up...

Strange ride last night. My predicted max heart rate is 181. Last night I did a 22 mile ride on my fixie. Even with some hills and pushing pretty hard I never got my rate over 170 ? I haven't ridden since Saturday. Yesterday afternoon was really hot here but I would have thought that would have made it easier to get my rate up... Any thoughts as to what could be going on. I felt OK... Not particularly strong, but OK. On a couple of the climbs I pushed well into the zone where lactic acid shut down my going any harder. Before the ride, driving over to the start, I noticed my rate was in the mid 50s... Normal for me just sitting very still.

just riding isn't hard isn't gong to get you towards your max.... if you want to test it then on a day when you are well rested and motivated to do it start with 10 minutes of warming up. Next try starting in a gear and pedaling with a high cadence. Shift to a harder gear one at a time while keeping up the cadence. Once it starts to become too hard for you to continue then sprint as hard as you can for 30 seconds and that should get you close to your max.

Oh, I wasn't trying to get to my max, just riding. However, I normally get into the mid 170s on climbs and when I push pretty hard. My HRM chimes when I get to 175 and usually set it off once or twice during rides. Last night I noticed my rate didn't seem normal for what I was doing.... Thanks

i think the gear that you use can also influence your HR. were you using a bigger gear? for me, i've noticed that if i spin on hills, my HR will increase a lot more than if I use a bigger gear, mainly due to the fact that a bigger gear uses your legs and smaller one uses your cardio.

besides, reaching 170 when your MHR is 181 is quite good if you were not trying to reach your max.
