There's been a few threads lately with some good discussion on veganism. From reading them, I've realized that there are obviously still a lot of myths out there... I just wanted to point out that Scott Jurek, a vegan, just won one of the world's most prestigious ultra-marathon run, the 135 mile Badwater in Death Valley. Not only did he win, but crushed the previous record by over 30 minutes. This was only a week after he won the Western States 100 for a record 7 consecutive times.

I've met Scott and heard him speak at the Seattle VegFest a few years ago. He is an amazing guy and is extremely knowledgeable about nutrition. I'm not trying to claim his veganism is the reason he won, just wanted to show that it can be an advantageous diet for athletes.

This vegan dude is strong!

Vegan Power!

No animal products needed for this guy

That' s truly impressive!

shaharidan 07-28-05 09:37 AM

Wow!!!!

KirkeIsWaiting 07-28-05 09:43 AM

It would be interesting to go deeper into his diet.
I was raised vegan.
I had difficulties racing and later bodybuilding in my teens/20's.

an amazing accomplishment.

shimanopower 07-28-05 09:58 AM

I'm trying to put together a diet completely based on meat and animal products. Anyone willing to help?

At that time, were you also excluding protein from eggs & milk?

That guy is quite impressive. I have never felt that my diet holds me back at all, but stereotypes do not seem to die easily (some never do).

Scott doesn't consume any protein from eggs or milk.

Neither does this guy.

Or even this guy.

Excellent idea! I've been toying with it off and on, and have a few suggestions.

1) lard, preferrably fresh, is good as a spread *and* as a dessert by itself (chilled of course). Sprinkles optional.

2) raw eggs rock, a la Rocky I. I like them because they are a great source of protein, and if eaten in the morning before training, they'll make you mean. Don't think so? Eat 3 or 4 raw eggs and try to be in a good mood right after waking up. Maybe it's just me, but the anger makes me feel focused.

3) don't neglect the beef fat. Oh Lo'd do I love the beef fat! I like to make shredded beef and keep all the fatty pieces to eat for a high cal snack. Good with Coke for some reason.

4) if in a bind without meat to eat, find a vegan.

Sorry guys, we evolved to eat meat, too. Ask our cousins the chimps (who are also tasty with Coke).

I know you were being sarcastic but apart from the cola that was a good diet. And the Vegan of course.

I doubt that you have eaten it though but I have. As a clarification the raw part is important if you want to get by without vegetables and as another clarification I DO eat my vegetables and I'm not realy reccomending a diet without them.

EDIT: I have heard that a raw animal food diet can give you a lot of umpha and make it hard to sit around but I haven't heard that it makes you angry.

Regards, Anthony

I wasn't asking about those athletes.

bunabayashi,
KirkeIsWaiting said it was a vegan diet, so that would exclude eggs and milk. vegan=no products from animals, not just meat.

MsMittens 07-29-05 07:00 AM

As someone who's rather ignorant about this, what food stuff is used then to replace protein that is often obtained in animal-based products? And what quantities?

Essentially, you have to re-direct your viewpoint so that your diet does not require "replacing" animal protein, but rather is balanced of itself. We need about 5-10% of our calories as protein for basic sustenance. (Athletes and other highly active people might need a slightly higher proportion to allow for cell regeneration.) If you base your diet on staple grains (corn, wheat, oats, etc.) plus legumes (lentils, beans, chickpeas, soybeans, etc.) you will find that it's super easy to achieve that balance. For example, plain ol' rye bread has 13% of its calories as protein. Broccoli has over 30% of its calories as protein!

So basically, if the diet is based on a wide variety of whole foods, you don't have to worry about protein!

His accomplishment is impressive, amazing, and wonderful, but the fact that he doesn't eat meat or animal products is irrelevant.

That's the whole point! Just trying to dispell these myths that you need animal products to succeed as an athlete. The truth is a vegan diet can be just as beneficial as what's considered necessary for athletes.

Don Gwinn 07-29-05 10:05 AM

They're not saying he did it because he's a vegan. They're saying that being a vegan didn't keep him from doing it. However, being a vegan obviously affected his mental capacities, because he ran for 135 miles in Death Valley. If that's not crazy, what is?
;)

Nonsuch, you laugh, but if you google "Paul Anderson Beef Juice" I bet you can find a detailed description of perhaps the strongest man in history drinking blood, fat, etc. from beef blended together. He thought it made a huge difference in his development.
Even if it worked, that's more dedication than I have.

konageezer 07-29-05 10:22 AM

This whole live-longer, look-better thing about veganism sound all right, but fails to address the issue of Wally's Drive-in. No more Chuck Wagons? My extended vegan life would just mean more time to go without having a delicious Chuck Wagon. I just don't see how it's worth it. I could try their "Veggie Burger," I guess. (It's a fried egg sandwich with lettuce, tomoto, onions and special sauce.) Mmm. I feel a trip up Kingsway coming on.

not a bad idea, but you need some fibre, or you'll only crap once a week :)

Don Gwinn 07-29-05 01:13 PM

Psssst. . . . he was kidding. . . .

right on:)

GLobal 07-29-05 03:08 PM

I've been vegan almost 2 years and not only am I stronger, but I don't think that their is any way this diet is preventing me from preforming at my best. People who preach you need to eat meat are full of crap. Look at carl Lewis. The guy competed in 4 olympics and won like 10 medals. He was a vegan. As other people have said, being vegan may have not got him those medals, but it shows that it sure doesn't prevent people from being world class athlete's.

Only 4% of meat is crap. It's mandated by law. Mmmm… e.coli.

So basically, if the diet is based on a wide variety of whole foods, you don't have to worry about protein!

If you eat 2000 Cal/ day, then 100- 200 calories (5- 10% of total caloric consumption), = 25- 50 g (4 Cal/ gram protein). If you're 70 kg then = .36 g protein - .71 g pro / kilo bodyweight. Not what you meant, right? But why should it matter how much protein the bread has in relation to it's other contents? I think most people approach it from a b.m. ratio. applied to total intake of caloiries.

I think it's easier to eat a set amount of protein through out my day which is based on #g pro/ kg body mass. It's easy (I think more accurate, too). Time not spent thinking about these things = time for other stuff. So I just am sure to eat that much protein, and most other food in sight and I'm good.

I didn't see anyone type "I went and tried raw eggs". Nobody here knows what it's like early on in your day, huh? C'mon people, it's an egg. Yaint guna die. Do it... eat two or three...

'you don't have to worry about protein!' Nope, 'cuz I've got protein powder. Amazing stuff. Truly a wonder. Better still, cow, turkey, fishy fishy fish, chicken, chimps. I'll pass on the blood pudding, guvnah.

1g pro/ kg bm + everything else in arms reach . Nice and easy. I like buffets alot.

sammyphsyco 07-31-05 06:22 PM

if God didn't want us to eat animals he would not have made them out of Meat
