Race day Breakfast?

Hey all,

I have a race coming up soon. What would you suggest I eat for breakfast? I will awake at 530am and the race begins at 8am, sharp.

Thank you for your time.

I like a banana and a whole wheat bagel.
I have a friend who has a clif bar and a sports drink.
I have read that pb&j sandwiches are good pre race fuel.

I could suggest that you have a big feed of bacon, eggs and sausages and start yet another Barney with the carbohydrate folk but that's just being mischievous on my part!

my real suggestion is to have a reasonably substantial breakfast that your body is comfortable with at a time that your comfortable with and give yourself a decent amount of time to digest it.

Don't load up on carbohydrates if they make you bloated and if you like bacon and eggs go right ahead. If you like cereal then tuck in but don't gorge yourself.

Regards, Anthony

Race day I eat a 1/2 cup of oatmeal, sliced banana and a splash of milk. A glass of OJ mixed with tonic water. As I drive to the race I will sip coffee. Then when I get to the race I will run to the porta potty a couple times. Then about an hour B4 the race I will warm up on the trainer and drink a bottle of sports drink and if a long race maybe eat a Power bar. B4 I leave my car I will pop 3 Enduralytes and as I ride to the start I will eat a GU.

Thanks all for the responses. I do Dirt Crit. The race was this morning and I place 11th Overall and 9th in my bracket.

I improved from the last 2 races in the series.

Race #1, I was 34th place
Race #2, I was 25th place.
Race #3, I was 9th place.

Why was I so absent minded. I couldn't think of PBJ sandwich. Geez. Thx.

I ended up going lite. I had a cliff bar, gatorade water, toast. Oh, yeah and a Taquito from 7-11.
: ) Just 1.

Thanks, you guys always have the right answers.

that's pretty much what i eat, too. i've found over the season that eating less is actually better for me. during training is when you should figure this stuff out, if it's an important race you don't want to try something new an hour before you're at the start line. i found this out the hard way when trying to eat oatmeal before hand (which works for most people...just not me ).

What helps most on race day is training!! Eat a good breakfast consisting of things you are comfortable with. I don't buy all the poop about eating special stuff. Maybe if you alter your diet perm. but the main thing is to not run out of fuel and don't make yourself sick on race day. I've had a few idiot friend try a "special" new drink or bar or what not on race day only to make themselves ill. Keep it simple and have fun.

I'm with Anthony on this one. By the time race-day comes along, you've should've already put in weeks of training and preparation. So that last meal you have before the race isn't really gonna make much of a difference compared to the thousands of miles and thousands of meals you've had already. Just be sure to eat early enough before the race that you've digested most of it so that it doesn't come back up unexpectantly when you're exerting yourself. I've had the usual cereal/banana/yogurt breakfast, or the Denny's Grand-Slam breakfast (two eggs, bacon/sausauges, pancakes, coffee, orange-juice), or even 1/2 of a Freebird's SuperMonster chorizo burrito leftover from the night before (1/2 of 2.5-lbs = 1-1/4 lb burrito). None of it's made any difference as far as my performance goes. Just be sure to drink extra water with the salty stuff, it seems to make your stomach selfishly hog your water-supply....

I say eat whatever won't F with your stomach during pre-race/tour nerves. That is deadly. For me, it's lox and whole wheat bagels and low fat cream cheese. Good amount of all the macronutrients and digests well.

to avoid the pre-race turmoil I always eat the same thing chicken and pasta the night before and oatmeal toast w/1tbs peanut butter and a banana. I think it has become more superstition than anything else. I fear change
