Setting trainer resistance

I recently picked up a magnetic trainer used for $50 - which I thought was a pretty good deal. I have never really used one before and have been experimenting with the resistance settings. Is there any way other than trial and error to figure out a setting that equates to riding on a road? For this one (blackburn) there is a dial which increases pressure on the tyre and a 3 setting adjustment on the magnet. Any tips?

Thanks
