Riding Style
I am relatively new to cycling, but now do 8-10 hours a day on roads and doing courier work. I hardly use the seat when pedalling and spend most of the time standing up. I dont know the technical term for that. Is this advisable? I take it seats were obviously put there for a reason. Any long term problems envisaged? Does it mean I am getting fitter to last all day and 40-50 miles without sitting? My knees start to ache but I would imagine I may get used to it. I am a 39 year old regular marathon runner. Would welcome any comments/advice

well, i don't think there is a more technical term for it... you're standing. a lot. a whole lot, buddy. you should sit down. take a load off. kick those dogs up, man. is your seat adjusted properly? how would you know. you don't sit on it...
sit down, man.
sit down, man.

I think the techically term is "mashing."
Ya, I agree...site down and work on getting those pedals around smoothly.
Also, mashing everyday, all day will have your HR high.
Some days reserve for easy spinning, with little effort involved.

Sitting is more efficient. Standing allows for more power as you can use your body weight to push the pedals down.
If you can ride all day standing up, more power to you.

Mashing isn't the best thing for your knees. I like standing up too though cause I feel like I'm flying on a flat road with high gear. Its a good idea to have a low gear/smooth pedal stroke on your saddle. Fun to try and perfect the pedal stroke and increase cadence. Sounds like you endurance is great though. Variety is key
