healthy living-tanita and kashi-how are your numbers?

starting my new 'healthy living' kick for the new year. so i bought that body fat measuring tanita weight scale and, based on recommendations from people here, i bought some kashi go lean crunch. my observations so far:

tanita - according to this thing, i have 9.3% body fat, 140 lbs of muscle, i'm thin and muscular, i need a minimum of 1900 calories a day, i have the metabolism of a 12 year old, and average bone mass. this thing is obviously broken. even if it is in error by 33%, i still have a body fat of 12%. i laughed at that for quite a while. and 'thin and muscular'? my love handles would beg to differ

kashi - i agree with everyone; it's pretty good. i'm full from one bowl. but i don't know if i have the teeth for it; it's like eating rocks

so how are your numbers to start the year? and what are you going to change to be better on the bike this year than last? personally, i've decided to get all my medical advice from danno and caperoadie (scary, isn't it?).

smoke - the oldest 12 year old you'll EVER know

I love Kashi. I dont care about sugar, its not a problem for me, saturated and trans fat are what i want to reduce.

I looked at one of those scales......for a minute then came to my senses. I'm a guy, and an engineer, any gadget has a strong pull for me.

Im 10 lbs over my ideal weight. I'll be there in a month or 2.
My only goals for the new year are to not chicken out commuting due to bad weather. If i can do that, everything else will happen on its own and i dont have to even think about it.

Gratz on the being a muscular 140 lb 12 year old Smoke

While I don't think tanita's are that accurate, are you sure you but in the right height and also are those readings from "athlete" mode? I find this mode a bit generous but overall I think the scale is good to track progress.

From any reading i've done about Tanita's, you are correct. You cannot believe the reading they give. But you can believe the trend they show. Get a reading at the same time every day, and it will correctly show if your loosing or gaining body fat over time.

It just wont accuratly tell you what that value is.

Tanita = dodgy.

The only accurate way to determine BF is calipers (by an experienced professional who always measures you, i.e. same person each time) or hydrostatic.

Yeah, the Tanita BF measurement is questionable. In athlete mode today I'm 6.8% and in regular mode its 10% higher. Somewhere in the middle is most likely correct, but as some have already said, it's consistent enough to monitor trends.

Kashi is deelish but toxic with calories. I mix it with nonfat yogurt.
