Does anyone have a home-made GU/Gel recipe they could share with me?

Thanks,

Add a shake of salt (or Half Salt, a KCl/NaCl mix) and a shake of cinnimon to some liquid honey. Mix it up in a little plastic bag and tear off a corner to suck out the goop.

Not nearly as good as GU or cliff shot... for me the taste is worth the money.

Did you know that studies have shown a decrease in performance when creatine was ingested just prior to, and/or during exercise? PUBMED has a study that I read the other day. Creatine needs to be stored in the muscle for it to enhance performance.

Here's a link to that study.

I've been playing around with it a little over the past few weeks.

There's a couple of approches you can take.

The pure honey route is easy and good. Mix a little mint in with it (studies show it helps to ignore the pain - don't ask me why) and you're "good to go".

You can go the brown rice syrup route, which is the main ingredient in Cliff Shot gel. It's an easy mix with various flavors. It's a good source of carbs, but not electolytes, etc.

I've also been trying mixing maltrodextrin (the base ingredient in GU) with some flavoring. It's real cheap, but tastes like chalk. Probably because the only source of maltodextrin I've tried so far is from Now Foods, and it's not amalgamated so it doesn't mix well.

There is another product, can't remember the name right now, by TwinLabs - think it's their "Ultra Fuel", which is flavored maltodextrin. If you mix it in high concentrations to make it very high in carbs, it's very very sweet.

Let me know what you come up with.

Interesting thread. Whe I read the OP, I was thinking honey might work. What about adding protein powder to honey? Or is that a no-no during exercise? Is honey in fact easier to digest since it is a liquid? What about adding powdered gatorade/accelerade or other to honey? Maybe it's experimentation time!

I believe that honey is fairly well saturated sugar solution. You are not likely to be able to dissolve much powdered anything into it. You'll need to add some water to make that work.

However, other than changing the flavor, there is really no reason to add any more sugars to honey for energy purposes. Honey is already about as concentrated as it gets for a carbohydrate energy source.

And as far as electrolytes go, energy gels are not a good source of electrolytes unless you eat a lot of them. Better to use sports drink to get those or eat just about any kind of snack food. The main electrolyte you need is sodium (salt) anyway and there is plenty of salt in most foods to ward off hyponatremia.

Interesting thread...it got me thinking about ways to dispense honey concoctions other than a plastic bag (which might get pretty messy after biting the corner off). How about using a small nalgene dispensing bottle such as the one pictured below. I think I am going to try it; I am imagining that if I keep it in my back pocket, it will stay warm enough to squeeze right out (although some may be left inside, at least you can just close the cap and put it cleanly back in your pocket).

Those containers appear to have too small an opening to squeeze out honey. Get a gel flask. I use one that came with some hammer gel. I also have a flask from Nashbar, but the opening is too restrictive for honey or gel so I don't recommend it.

Walmart sells 3 oz flasks in the personal hygene products area, which are meant for shampoo and stuff, but the orifice is about the same size as the tip of a honey squeeze thing, so it should work well. I have considered doing this for a long time, but I have never actually tried it. I think that they are like 50 cents or a dollar.

Gu?

Why the hell can't I make the "u" in the "Gu" above in all capitals??? No matter how much I edit, it changes back to a lowercase "u" when I save...
