Intense pain, not being able to put sentences together, some vomiting, not being able to stand noises or light. The final straw was the day that they thought I had a stroke. The entire left side of my body went numb, my tongue went numb. I could barely speak and the pain was unbarable. Once I got to the hospital they rushed me in and treated me as a stroke victim for the first thirty minutes or so.

For treatment they pumped me full of drugs, I can't remember what they were. I do know that it never completely eliminated the pain. It just made it so that I could stand the car ride home. I have imitrex for migraines but it only works about 25% of the time.

I'm not trying to tell you anything. All I stated is that for some people gradual works, some it doesn't. Whenever I try the gradual thing I always fall back to my normal routine eventually. When I quit cold turkey I am able to quit, I consider myself a failure* if I go back to my old ways.

So far the going cold turkey and being very aggressive at changing my lifestyle has worked great for me.
I haven't smoked for five years. When I quit I smoked three packs a day.
I haven't had caffeine for five years. When I quit I drank 4 - 6 pepsi's a day.
I've lost 50 pounds by being very aggressive.
I drink 2 - 4 beers a month. I used to drink an average of 8 - 12 every night. I was in the bars more than I was home.

*I'm not saying people are a failure for not being able to quit things, I'm just saying that is how my mind works.

The dose that was give to lab animals was way beyond what a human could consume pound for pound. I do agree that there are problems with using sweeteners like this.

Sure, that's the justification to pass the stuff off as benign. And those are old-style studies. Here's a more recent one: Medical News Today - Aspartame Causes Cancer in Rats at Levels Currently Approved for Humans

Thank you. I hope you never have another. The Imitrex does nortwork well for me either. Relpax or Caffergot works for me.

I believe a congradulations on turning your entire life around is in order; as well-intentioned as many are in trying to do so, very few actually follow through completely with it.

One thing that I've always been lucky with is that I have always been involved in one sport or another since even before I was a teenager. I never fell into the whole smoking/drugs/excessive alcohol/etc. scene; for some, sports really are a "saving grace". Some people realize this early on in life, others realize it later on in life. There is no greater "high" than pushing your body to its' limits, and succeeding at what you are doing (I don't necessarily mean in a competitive aspect).....whether it be riding a bike, climbing a mountain, running a marathon, so on and so forth. It's those days when you feel like you can go forever and feel stronger than you ever have before, that makes all the training and discipline worth it.

Ok, I'll stop preaching now

I used to drink about 2 double-shot coffees a day. I recently quit cold turkey and experienced afternoon headaches for about 2 weeks. That was about it though.

Just dont try and quit smoking and caffine at the same time. Carzy man coming through!!! I quit cigs 10+ years ago, the coffee however still rules my mornings. Hmm....this post is making me think about cutting back. I know I drink too much. Well, to the OP, best of luck and drink lots of water.

I've since started drinking the Diet Dew again. I felt very, very depressed. Not sick or having any headaches, but just really down. After have a couple of Diet Dews, I feel great again. Not sure HOW I'm ever going to kick this.

I've heard it takes 3 weeks to make or break a habit, and I found that to be true with the coffee (as I mentioned somewhere earlier in this thread). Just tell yourself that you are going to make it 3 weeks without your Diet Dews ... that's all. Really, 3 weeks isn't that long ... it isn't a lifetime.

And then keep busy .... ride LOTS!!

I"ve been off caffeine since Jan 1st, removed 90% of all sodas (sprite/7up only on rare occasions - won't do the diet thing, but stay away from the caffeine). Typically I order only water when eating out, though I do have a Margarita or two now and then. I had urges for the first several weeks, but they have subsided and I really don't even think about wanting the stuff any more. But you do have to make the choice every time you go out to eat - water or Dr. Pepper (my weakness).
