Do any of you get persistent sores in the crotch area from riding?

Saddle sores? Yup. Was laid up for most of last July with 'em, which was a bummer since a broken wrist ended my season permanently at the beginning of August. I think I was starting to be on to some preventive techniques though. Most important one: change after riding! I think my 2.5 mile commute, done in work clothes that I then wore during the day, is what did me in.

From the experience of women I know, cycling shorts intended for women help as does ensuring that the saddle height and tilt are correct. Related to this, make sure there isn't too much reach forward to your handlebars.

Use a chamois cream as well.....I haven't had any issues with saddle sores, but those who have gotten them and started using a cream (such as Chamois Butt'r) swear by it. I've never gotten sores, but I will start using a cream when I start doing some longer distance rides (200+ mile rides).

It is important to wash and dry the area thoroughly (use a hairdryer set on cool/low if you need to).
Also, use a powder containing zinc oxide and apply liberally before riding and after bathing. You can also use one of those barrier type creams formulated for diaper rash - zinc and castor oil cream is an oldfashioned but very effective one. Sorry I can't suggest any brand names (unless you live in Australia)
Finally check your riding shorts to make sure you haven't got any high seams or such which can promote chafing and also, wear a clean pair every time you ride.
After riding, change into underwear made of natural fibres, cotton etc. which allows for better air circulation.

Hey shona. I went through a bad bout with this a few months ago, but am all healed up now and have not had any trouble since. You might want to try the suggestions here:
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ighlight=sores

I use Assos Chamois Creme every time I put on riding shorts/tights now, and am very satisfied with it. Your saddle and its position are also very important. Make sure the fore/aft position is set so that your sit bones line up with the "sweet spot" of the saddle where they are supported and carrying your weight, and a good practice is to use a bubble level to make sure your saddle is level.

Good luck! - RJ
