Suggestion requested on purchasing an exercise bike

Hi,

I am looking to purchase an exercise bike. I have a limited budget of about $200 - $250. I will mostly be using this during the winters when its to cold to run outside. Can anyone suggest me a brand and a type of exercise bike ? I came across two brands ( Schwinn and Revmaster ) that fitness experts say are very good. However they cost between $600 to $1000. Your help will greatly benefit me.

Regards

Abhi

I have a Schwinn 201 recumbent that I really like. It cost about $250 on sale at Amazon.com. The first exercise bike I bought was a Proform recumbent, but is was nothing but trouble. I burned the bearings out in about 2 months. I ordered another set of bearings, and those burned out in another 2 months. At that point, I bought the Schwinn. It has lasted for over a year of riding about 5 hours per week. It is smoother and more comfortable than the Proform. The only real problem I see with it is the built in heart rate monitor. Instead of giving you an instant reading, it slowly build up to your working heart rate in increments of 2 - 5 bpm. It can take a minute or two to get to the right number which would be annoying if you are doing interval training. I use my own monitor, though, so it has never been a problem for me.

To Pelon,

Checked out the Schwinn 201 recumbent. Looks good. How does magnetic resistance compare with air resistance. The Schwinn Airdyne is almost $700, any idea why is that?

To Akarius

I do not have any knowledge about a trainer. What is it?

Thank you for your inputs

Abhi

Do you ride? If so, then just slap one a bike trainer, like one you can find on ebay on your ride.

If you don't cycle, start

I don't have much experience with Airdynes (other than at the gym), but I do know that one major difference is that mag-based bikes are quieter.

On that note, the resale of the non-high end exercise bikes tends to be pretty low. If you're in a populous area you should be able to get a recent and decent model for like $100.

Hey zowie

Non-high end exercise bikes. Can you elaborate? I am also looking into bicycle trainers. Some of them are pretty costly. I also need to purchase a road-bike as the mountain bike tires make a lot of noise, on the trainers... some say. Anyone has a suggestion on a good road bike brand?

Perhaps if you gave us a bit more background on yourself we can be more helpful. Its pretty clear you're not a cyclist (at least not yet). Are you preparing for an event of some kind? What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

Larry's right, but to answer your question, I was referring to the better of the models that they sell in the chain athletic stores that are in around the $400 range, which are fairly well built and good for general fitness but not as good for cycling-specific training as some of the $1000 spinners that better simulate the rider position of a real bike.

Ok. Here is the picture.

I am just trying to loose weight.. about 40 pounds. I am 5ft 8in and weigh 195 lb. I have got the diet worked out, but I am trying to get the exercise aspect going. I cannot find the time to go to the gym, and so I do some light exercises at home. However this is not giving me a good workout. Last summer I went running and lost a lot. But come winter the exercises stopped and I gained again. So I am back to square one. Bicycling is a good calorie burner and so I would like to do that.

Thank you for all your inputs. It should not be difficult to make a decision.
