Swimming training advice

Friends,

I usually swim three times a week at noon. I'm 55, 6' and weigh 205. My 1600 meter time is 30 minutes or less every swim with a recent best of right at 28:50.

Some days I don't have time for a full swim because of work commitments. My Question:

Is there a value to getting to the Y and swimming 500 meters if I do drills only? What would doing 10 fifty's on the minute do for me if I went as hard as possible? I sometimes do these in the middle of a longer swim and try to finish 50 meters in 50 seconds or so and go again on the top of the minute. During a longer swim, I am sure this is beneficial.

Would doing only 500 meters of these even be worth getting wet?

I tend to mix up my swims with a mile focusing on endurance (not time) 3 days a week and then intervals of sprints more like what you describe for a 1/2 mile the other 3 days.

Perhaps warming up for 5 and then doing intervals of sprints for the second 5 (sprint 1, rest 30 seconds, sprint 1, rest 30 seconds etc.) would be worth a try. It's good to get in at least a couple of the longer swims during the week and a couple of interval swims. Overall the intervals will help you swim faster. I used to add flippers and do a few butterfly at the end when my time was really limited.

I think it's always worth getting wet. Even on days when you are short on time and you don't feel like pushing yourself it's a great way to warm up your body for the day.
