Beep Test?

Has anyone in this forum used the beep test in his training programme? if so what level did you achieve?

KristofDorgai 03-19-06 05:01 PM

Although I am starting out as cyclist and have not incorporated it into my program, I have done it before. In the past I achieved level 9 and than 10.5. If someone trains it, it is possible to improve 2-3 levels in the span of a month. I would also like to say that it is an excellent workout for the entire body. You will be coughing up your lungs afterwards.

=)

The cruelest workout known to soccer players world wide. It sucks!

When I was 52 and my 18-year old daughter was trying out for an NCAA soccer team, this was incorporated into a three month PT program. It not only gives you a bench mark for measuring your stamina and speed, it improves it. It is somewhat like "testing to destruction" though.

I forget what level we each achieved, but we improved markedly as the summer progressed. The US Men's Soccer team uses it and some of the levels these guys reach are phenomenal. While it rewards both speed and endurance, my opinion is that rewards endurance most.

Try it. You'll hate it. But it will be good for you. It should be incorporated into an overall program.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the Beep test?

Machka 03-19-06 11:39 PM

Yes ... they inflicted that test on us in my Kinesiology class. I didn't do so well at it, but here's the background ...

1) They chose a day that was +5C (40F), with a chilly wind
2) I have been diagnosed with Exercise Induced Asthma triggered by exertion in cool, damp weather conditions.

I did use one of my inhalers a couple hours before the test, but I should have brought one with me to use just before the test.

I ended up being unable to breathe - rasping and wheezing, dizzy, and turning all purple.

If I were to ever do that again, I would want to do it under somewhat warmer conditions!!

I think it is also known as the Cooper Fitness Test, or PACER test.

Rusty this is for you......

The beep test, also known as the bleep test, multi-stage fitness test, or shuttle run test, is used by sports coaches and trainers to estimate an athlete's maximum oxygen uptake better known as VO2 Max. The beep test is especially useful for players of sports like football, hockey, or rugby. The beep test involves running continuously between two points that are 20 meters apart (also found in 15 meters). These runs are synchronised with a pre-recorded audio tape, CD or laptop which plays beeps at set intervals. As the beep test proceeds, the interval between each successive beep reduces, forcing the athlete to increase velocity over the course of the beep test, until it is impossible to keep in sync with the recording.

Thanks for your replies. So far the only dedicated website to the beep test which I found is the reference site. Quite good and found some interesting information. According to them Lance Armstrong is one of the very few people who can complete all 23 levels!

Steve

Steven,

You really ought to try it. In a perferted sort of way it is fun. If you're competitive (dah!), it's fun to do it with a buddy that is near your own ability. The two of you can push yourselves and hang on like grim death through the last few rounds. Plus, early in the test, you can joke around and cuss the whole thing as you do it.
