Madeline Albright Can Leg Press 400lbs

Is 400lbs good? How does that relate to squats and what's the benchmark test for leg strength?

AND,

How does this relate to cycling?

'NYT' Sunday Preview: Madeleine Albright Can Leg-Press 400 Pounds

By E&P Staff

Published: April 20, 2006 1:35 PM ET

NEW YORK In an interview in the The New York Times Magazine that will appear this coming Sunday, Madeleine Albright reveals, among other things, that even at 68, she works out three times a week "and I can leg-press up to 400 pounds." This follows a discussion of how she does not expect to re-marry, partly because, as she says, "I'm intimidating, don't you think?"

I bet she, like most folks I see at the gym, gets about 5 degrees of bend in her leg before she completes the press. I don't think there's a fair benchmark for quadriceps exercises since form is such a huge factor in how much weight you can move. Just measure your own improvement over time and don't worry about what the other people are doing.

Like *new*guy said, just worry about what you can do. I can do over 500 pounds if I don't worry about my form or number of reps. However that does nothing for cycling. I would rather do them correctly and higher numbers of reps with less weight.

If I am going to worry about numbers it's going to be in the form of wattage.

That's not too bad for a near 70 year old lady.....

Depending on the type of leg press machine you're using, it can be fairly easy to do 400, or somewhat more difficult. All the gyms I went to, had a 45 degree leg press machine, which is harder than the types where you push straight out (like at the community center I'm a member of). Back when I was 14 years old, I could leg press 500lbs for 10 reps, but only squat 275lbs for 6 reps. Squatting is more indicative of leg strength and power. For men, I can almost guarantee that most any adult could leg press 400 pounds on a 45 degree machine for reps after 4-5 weeks at a gym (provided they train properly). It's the 500 and over mark where it starts to get hard.

You're thinking of another character in the Clinton Administration, Monica Lewinsky.

I happen to train using 400 lbs with 30-40 reps - 3 sets and a 90 degree knee bend. I'm in my 50's. I'm not particularly big or strong. A few reps with a shallow knee bend, for someone in their 60's shouldn't be too difficult if they work out at all. The amount of knee bend will greatly affect the amount. I could probably do 800 for a few reps and little knee bend.
