Quaker Gets It!! :)

https://www.canadanewswire.ca/en/rele.../03/c3162.html

"The Quaker Chewy brand helps ease frustration with a new sub-line of lunch box friendly peanut-free Quaker Chewy bars"

https://www.breakfastcentral.ca/product.asp

"Introducing Quaker Chewy® Peanut Free* Bars, made in a peanut-free facility*
Six of your favourite Quaker Chewy® bar flavours are now made in a peanut-free facility* - Chocolate Chip, S'Mores, Rocky Road, Bumble Berry, Raspberry Fruit Crumble and Apple Fruit Crumble! Enjoy them as a morning snack or lunch box item. Look for the specially-marked packages."

I'll be adding them to my list of snacks to take on rides!

Peanuts make me feel horrible. I'm not technically allergic to them, but I bloat badly and go into agonizing, nauseating abdominal cramps. Not exactly something I want to experience in the middle of a ride!!!

Unfortunately they seem to be a popular source of nourishment in energy bars, and at controls and rest stops on organized cycling events. But maybe if more companies follow Quaker's lead, maybe there will be more peanut-free choices out there!

Well, you either are or you aren't allergic. If your symptoms are limited to the GI tract, you are not allergic (technically or otherwise). True peanut allergy will manifest itself outside of the GI tract, usually with hives on the belly, face, and moderate to severe swelling, usually to the mouth/lips, eyes, and -- the most frightening part -- the airway.

While I don't doubt that having cramps and bloating is unpleasant, you will probably pull through, maybe even be able to complete your ride. Sadly, many people with peanut allergy are not so lucky: the swelling to the airway and shock induced by anaphylaxis can be deadly if aid is not administered immediately. It is not anything to joke about.

Machka if you have trouble with other legumes you should consider getting yourself checked out for Crohn's disease.

I'm not allergic to peanuts ... that's what I said. And the cramps and bloating are MORE than unpleasant ... the cramps are so bad I have to lie down to deal with them ... and when I get through that part, then there's the toilet part which wipes me right out for hours.

I realize that a true allergy is much, much worse .... and that's what astounds me about the fact that so many sports nutrition companies and ride organizers still insist on creating and serving food products with peanuts.

And I have been checked for Crohn's disease ... I won't be going through that set of tests again any time soon!!!

Lots of people are allergic to different things. Nuts, eggs, milk (in all its forms including whey, butter, yogurt, etc.), wheat, soy, etc. etc. etc. It's unrealistic to expect every company to eliminate every potential allergen.

However, it is nice that some companies are "getting it" and separating manufacturing processes where it's not really necessary.

It all depends on where the stuff is manufactured. Many companies manufacture their product at contract locations. These are independent manufacturing or packing facilities which lease space to companies under contract. Depending on how the contracts are written (read loopholes) the product may be produced in a slightly different way than intended.

Some facilities do what's called an allergen cleanout at each line changeover. This has been an extremely safe method and to my knowledge has never caused any problems even in facilities which process products made with peanuts.

Try the Breakfast bites. Same thing but small bite size pieces in a bag. Easy to eat while riding.

Why not just get a baggie and take the breakfast bars and break them up yourself? Seriously, do they think we have no thought processes?

There's no reason you can't do that, but on a bike not having it fall apart is just easier if you're moving. It would be easier for soccer mom to feed the kids and have a snack in the mini van, while talking on the cell phone, and plowing down cyclists on the way to soccer practice. It keeps the crumbs off the seats.

Quaker--I like their oatmeal, but I do put peanut butter in it.

If they ran out of peanut butter, I would have to rethink my entire life. Maybe it wouldn't even be worth living.

So you think if it was individually wrapped as opposed to just ripping open a baggie and reaching inside, then soccer moms will find it easier to feed kids and avoid hitting cyclists? :-/ Ummmmmm... explain the logic, cause I'm not seeing it.

Those bars are not like sports bars, they fall apart and crumble completely when you try and break them. if you put a few pieces in a bag you end up with crumbs in a bag after a while. The "bites" have a covering all around them so they don't fall apart.

I liked taking them on a bike ride the other day. When trying to break apart that brand of bars for a ride they crumble. I am getting bored with sports bars, and have a sweet tooth, so I like those bars.

I was trying to be sarcastic about the soccer moms. I keep forgetting that sarcasm does not work well in this format. Just imagine how bad, eating, talking on the cell, having loud kids in the back, and driving is.
The marketing of these "bites" encourages eating while driving and making things even worse for cyclists.(everyone, really)
Marketing just keeps on selling products by making things faster/easier/more convenient when multitasking. So that encourages doing lots of things at once. This is a case where it's not really a benefit, just a way to make money for the marketer. It frustrates me that more people don't understand this. It applies to almost everything.

Like cell phones, one of my pet peves, not the phone itself, but the marketed belief that we need them. And it is so widely accepted. The same kind of marketing for the "bites". Do more at the same time! You need our product to survive in the modern world!

Translated to truth means...give us your money, get addicted to our product, and spread the word. We need more money for the fuel for the private jet, and the limo. Don't call us while we are on the beach, because we shut off our phones.

Believe it or not, I haven't touched peanut butter in about 12 years! I went through all sorts of allergy testing back then ..... the tests where you eat chicken, rice, and pears for two weeks, and then add a suspect food into your diet for a week, then return to chicken, rice, and pears for another week or two, then add a second suspect food into your diet etc. I "reacted" to peanuts, citrus fruit, and dairy products during that process. I also lost about 10 lbs! But I haven't touched peanut butter since then.

Hmm. They had the S'mores on sale at Walgrens. I will have to ride over there tomorrow and check them out. I thought they were some type of candybar.

Chicken, rice, and pears everyday. I bet Machka lost weight from losing interest in eating.
