Vanity: I just wouldn't want to look like this

I have mad respect for pro cyclists. It's too bad about the upper body though. I know the reasons why they keep muscle upper body muscle off, but I'm too vain and just wouldn't want to look like this with my shirt off:

Makes me look like a body builder and I'm only 165 at 5'11"!

"So for $3.5 million a year you wouldn't look like that?"

For $3.5 million a year I'd be willing to look like this:

yeah i can understand a pro working to look like that, but i don't get the amateurs who risk their health or general fitness to look that way.

I guess it's moot now, but you can't accuse Jan of being fat, that's for sure.

Would you? If the devil told you that you could have your V02 max go up to 92, your LT shoot up to 89%, you can ride 40 minute TT's at 32mph, climb 12% grades in your 52x17, pick 10 bikes of your choosing, any bike, have sag wagon follow you on all your favorite rides, eat all the Ben and Jerry's you want, have a podium girl or two once in awhile... would you?

Why would you be risking your health if you looked like that, I have been thin most of my life and I am much better off than all those good looking fat people. Thin does not mean unhealthy-you would think on a bike forum that fact would be a forgone conclusion.

I doubt they eat all the ice cream they want and maintain 3% bodyfat.

Naturally thin is one thing. Having barely enough bodyfat to survive is another. At low body fat percentages various organs shut down like the brain and reproductive system.

Well Jan is about 6 ft and 160, when I was in my 30's I was 5ft 10 and weighed 151 so not too much difference to speak of. Check out the how tall and what do you weigh thread in the road cycling forum and you will find a whole bunch of people not healthy in your terms, I do think you are stretching the facts a little.
