Increased fitness and resting metabolic rate

Question: Since resting heart rate is lower when you're fitter, does that mean you burn fewer calories at rest?

No. It means that you are more efficient transporting oxygen to the cells.

Quite the contrary! Your BMR will actually be higher. Increased muscle mass also increases your BMR. Your heart rate is lower because your heart is stronger and a bit larger than the average. This means your blood can be fully circulated using fewer beats.
