THR training help?

Any tips as to how to start up and maintain a workout within my zones?

It seems like it takes quite a while to get up to my target zone and then it drops out when I end up stopping for a red light. I have never really done much with target heart rate until this year, but I have found that on long stretches of bike trail I can speed up or slow down to keep it where it should be.

I apologize if this is a stupid question. But is it just a matter of practice? Because I'm never really sure if I should just start hammering right out of the chute to raise it up or not.

Any info on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How long are your workouts? It takes a while for your body to "get it" so to speak. I wouldn't sweat it, take it easy and pedal at your expected effort for your target zone. Don't worry about the red light. A minute rest here and there won't hurt. Think of it as natural intervals! After warming up properly, your HR will creep upward for the same amount of effort and you'll reach your target easier. :) Jeff Galloway, of Gallowalking fame, even advocates walking a minute after each mile of running during a marathon.

Your goal should be the total amount of time spent in the zone. So warmup, ride in your HR zone, stop for a latte, ride home.
