split vs. single workouts?

split vs. single workouts?
Hi All,
Since forum searching is disabled for the moment, I'll re-ask a question I'm reasonably sure has been asked before.
If I have a 2.5 hour bike workout scheduled for a day and do it as a 1 hour and a 90 minute pair of workouts separated by 4 hours instead of all 2.5 hours at one go, is there much of a difference between them in terms of the training effect / physiological adaptions?

According to Joe Friel's book, split workouts give you a double shot of HGH - and it's a triple shot if you take a nap in between!

According to Fred Matheny's book, Road Bike Training, doing two separate workouts(like commuting to/from work) will burn more calories than a single workout of the same total duration by having two elevated metabolism windows rather than one.
But I imagine you're missing out on some endurance benefit from doing it all at once.
