Hernia...Any Advice

Multiple house projects, with some requiring lifting stones 200+ pounds have given me a inguinal hernia. Doctor says since it is okay as long as it continues to be reducible I will just need to take it easy until I have surgery.

Question is...I am on vacation and my bike is sitting there calling me. My Doc says take it easy. My wife is against any activity, except reaching for my wallet, so the bike is still on the roof rack.

Anyone else ever have this condition? If so please let me know if I can ride...

I rode and exercised with inguinal hernia for close to a year before I decided to get it fixed. Doc initially told me riding, running, lifting weights were fine if I were able to live with the discomfort and the inconvinience. Eventually I got fed up with constant pushing every 5 minutes of my inerts that I decided to get it fixed once and for all. I was out for like three weeks before I was able to get back on the bike.

I had a double repair when I was 18, and the right side done with more modern methods (the mesh deal) about 10 years later, so I've been there twice. I really can't imagine that cycling would be a major issue as long as you don't push it hard on your rides. Stay in the saddle and take it easy, you should be OK.

But ask your doctor, he's the expert and knows the severity of your hernia. They are often over cautious, but that's better than a strangulated hernia.

I'm now working on a belly-button hernia myself. From what Mom says, the doc predicted it at birth, and that was in 1967. Now I'm in a weight-loss mode to satisfy the current doc before he decides to fix it.

Been under the knife twice for this. I had it one time as an infant (right side) and again just last December (left side). I worked out with it for about 3 months this last time with no problems. I got it fixed mostly because it annoyed me rather than it stopping me. However, I suggest you pick and choose what surgery you want done. The doctor wanted the open mesh plug until I told him about how much I liked sports. We then decided the (TAPP) laparoscopic procedure was best for me. You could also have the TEP procedure done; but my surgeon did not like it after several attempts. He admitted it was a good procedure; but he said he found it troublesome. Both the TAPP and the TEP procedures offer much shorter recovery times. I recovered awesome fast after the TAPP.

I have a running buddy that is just now recovering from surgery for a hernia. His doctor told him the very same thing as Fixer's; running, riding were fine if you want to endure the discomfort. He just gritted his teeth to maintain his fitness until the operation date.

I did an easy 15 miles today after taking a week off the bike. No issues with pain, mobility or stamina. Post ride the same. Other than heavy lifting I can live like this for a while.

Has anyone had the TAPP hernia repair procedure? According to what I have read on the web this is the latest and greatest.

2 years ago I found out I had one 2 days before I left for an elk hunt. Dock said take it easy wrap it with ace bandage and if needed lay down and work it back in. I was up and down some rough mountains for a week with no problems.
