I had an unusual (to me) experience a few weeks back.
My friend and I were charging away towards a small hill where where we usually hold an unspoken competition to the top. About 200 yards out, I asked my body how it felt and got no response. Which I took as a positive thing... since at that point it's usually saying "noooooooo".
I eyed the approaching hill, took a few long, unusually calm breaths, and told myself "I'm gonna destroy him."
And I did. We hit the hill and I took it like I never had before. My logs tell me I flew up it at a constant 27mph. Which is normally unsustainable for me on just the flats. And the incredible thing is that I felt no pain, I didn't get out of breath, and my heartrate barely increased. I felt nothing at all, except for an incredible euphoria. For those 30 seconds or so, I had a completely out of body experience. After this, I continued to ride better and easier than ever for the next 20 minutes or so.
It was very surreal. As a newer athelete, I can only imagine it's what is normally called a runner's high. That feeling of euphoria caused by a rush of endorphins. I had never experienced it before. But now that I have, I want it back!
Is this normal? If so, how often - if ever - does it happen to you?
Taking a tip from Siu Blue Wind, I too am typing a lengthy passage of text down here to demonstrate the enormous amount of space available should one wish to use it-- in sharp contrast to the avatar text above this part.
I would call that state 'Racer's Planet', not necessarily an endorphin high. Racer's Planet is what I call that state I'm in durng a race when everything seems to distill down to what is happening right in that very moment, and nothing is more important than winning.
