Well, yes of course but only a competetive cyclist 'needs' to work on building their quad strength beyond what is already being developed by simply sitting on the bike and doing the kind of riding that that individual enjoys and/or needs to do for their commute or fitness program or whatever.

Because, it is a fact, that if one builds prime mover muscles beyond about a 3:1 ratio to the antagonist muscles, injuries become a definite possibility. Lower back pain, that crippling malady experienced by a huge percent of the population is in 90% of cases an imbalance in strength between the spinal errector muscles (strong) and the abdominal muscles (weak). The cure for a backache is plenty of abdominal work! Sore knees can be the result of too strong quads out of balance with the other muscles of the upper and lower leg and back.

Call me a wuss but I've stopped doing squats.
Too much potential for injuries.

I do leg press on a machine along with leg extensions and leg curls on machines
and don't feel like I'm missing anything.

Although the science says otherwise (you're not using the muscles that balance your body and stabilize other muscles if you aren't using free weights), it really comes down to the simple fact that you are weightlifting and that is beneficial, period.
