Breakfast!
Do you eat before or after a good morning ride? And what do you eat?
I can't hit the road on an empty, or even scantily-fed stomach. My hummingbird-like metabolism will burn it up and I'll get tired and hungry within twenty-thirty miles. But it's tough to get going after a larger meal. What's a good middle-ground? |

you should always eat before your ride, especially in the morning,..if you think about it you've just fasted for 8hrs of so before you've woken up, your body needs to refuel......however not so much as to make you feel sluggish. some toast, a bagel and cream cheese, or cereal is what i have, then some oj and coffee. the idea is to have some fuel in your system before you head out, then depending on how long you ride you supplement your enegry with snacks, gels etc. heading out on a empty stomach is just not a good idea (even for people trying to lose weight)

I eat oatmeal cooked with a sliced apple mixed with a mashed ripe banana .

My Saturday rides are about 30 miles, so I don't eat anything before I go...but when I get back, I make a big ol' bowl of oatmeal, adding raisins, dates and crushed walnuts, along with a scoop of vanilla protein powder. If I'm going 50 miles, I'll bring a couple of bars to eat along the way, but I don't like eating anything before I get on the bike.

Sometimes I have some oatmeal especially when it's cold out in the morning. A protein shake with about half of a frozen banana, ground flax seeds and two icecubes sometimes does the trick as well. So those are my usuals, just depends on what i'm feelin' that day. |

If I plan on going on a long ride I make sure I fuel up. I like to start off with some all bran and coffee. After that I like to fry up some eggs and ground beef in olive oil.
Of course if there is not enough time for that to digest I like to make some sort of smoothie. For me it is important that breakfast is one of the biggest meals of the day, and in most cases the more I plan to do the more I will eat, as long as there is time for it to digest before heading out. If there is not I make sure to take lots of food with me that I can eat on the hoof. After a ride I like to have a smoothie because I can jam a ton of fruit into one and I can get the calories in me quick, and then eat a bit more protein afterwards. |

If motivated, I'll make some steel cut oats... either in the morning or night before. It usually has a lot of assorted additions (fruit, nuts, flax, etc). In a pinch, I'll have some grapenuts (I use juice instead of milk). Maybe some dried apricots, too.

I like oatmeal with a banana cooked in it sweetened with honey. Great flavor and not too filling.

Nothing ground-breaking here....
I ALWAYS eat breakfast. I swear that my stomach wakes up like 2 hours before the rest of my body. It is rare for me to wake up and not feel hungry. :) As for breakfast: Either quick oats or 7 grain cereal (with flax seeds) with a banana or apple pieces. With soy milk. I find that this combination keeps me fullest for the longest time in the morning. Also, I always bring snacks with me, wherever I go. I find that I eat every 2-3 hours, and especially on a ride, you never want to be caught hungry. |
A bottle of Ensure Plus or Boost Plus. 375 calories. Goes down in 15 seconds. Easy to digest so you're on the road immediately.

Oh, regular unsweeted oatmeal and a box of rasiens is pretty good.

I usually have a clif bar and some water, though some days I might only have a half of one. I find that I need to have something pretty sugarry - like a few clif bloks - 15 minutes before I get on the bike, or it takes a long time to get my blood sugar up and start feeling decent.
I can't eat what I'd usually eat, which is a bowl of granola and some blueberries and strawberries with milk. If I do I feel really sick. |
