    No electronics

Does anybody know the formula for figuring out how many calories you are burning without using electronic devices other than a calculater?

    Fubar,

I also asked that one. After checking and re-checking the internet, and experimenting on my own, I came up with some loose approximations (which are probably far from totally accurate, but I figure as long as I am using the same system all the time, my errors will be consistant, allowing me to adapt accordingly.)

For me, I figure about 40 calories per mile. This includes post-ride calorie use do to a boosted metabolism. Some may think this too high. Others may use much more. I also subtract "calories used" from 2000, which is a very rough approximation of my daily requirement. I try to eat enough so that my daily intake balances out to about 2000 or more.

But the calculations vary widely according to several variables: your weight, bike weight, terrain, headwind/tailwind, speed (apparently you burn more calories at higher speeds due to creating your own headwind, much like a car uses more fuel at higher speeds do to wind resistance), etc.

In my case, my motive for counting calories (both in food intake and in calories expended in exercise) is to ensure I get enough to sustain my activity, without also overdoing the food intake.

I would look up "calories" and so forth on the internet and research it for yourself. That way you can figure in your body weight, bike weight, terrain, riding style, etc.

    And experiment.

I think I saw an interactive calorie calculator for various activities, that took into consideration your age and weight, on some health or fitness site. But I have no idea where it was. Might be worth looking at some of the fitness sites....

You might also want to look at www.biketracker.com

You enter your ride and some other info, and it estimates the calories you have burned. I log my rides there, it tracks all types of info, and generates some cool graphs.
