problem with my excercise bike

Yea I know excercise bikes went out some time ago.but it was only $8. so why not I could not afford a real trainer so this was the next best thing.I have been riding it a little for a while but now I decided to step up my game,so the other night I plugged in a copy of the tour de flanders and started cranking.
I spun for an hour playing with the resistance nob the whole time. The last mile (according to the old gauge that is mounted to this thing)I cranked the nob all the way down and stood up on the peddles and spun out at full throttle.
About 10 minutes later everyone came home and immeadatly started complaining about the smell. It seams that the little resistance wheel is burning up.Now I am not bragging about it cause I know that I am not the wattage output king but is this a common problem?I am trying to arrange the money for a trainer now but I am just not there yet.I have to make this work for a bit.I am thinking that if I burn up this little resistance wheel the wife will be more apt to let me get the trainer I am looking at,but if it keeps stinking up the house I am going to end up outside riding this thing.
Later.

Too bad you're in a small town. Otherwise you could check dumpsters behind bike shops for old trainers, and try the thrift stores. Otherwise, just keep it down. Daylight savings time in another 5 weeks or something.

Tis true about daylite savings time.I will be glad when it gets here.
My area around here only has one LBS and they don't seem to through anything away.At least anything good.
The thrift store idea is where i got the old exersice bike.
Used the thing again last night.this time I plugged in Cycle ops climbing video.Had anouther good work out.I managed to do the whole tape.Little stiff today. Not bad though.
