Fish oils...and Selenium.

I was ordering something online, and saw that they had a special on fish oils for 5 dollars/100 capsules. So I think, great and buy a few bottles. Problem is, after some research, I'm not too sure how pure these capsules are with reguards to the mercury content. I thought someone on here said that the purification process eliminates a lot of it off the top, but I don't know.
I read a fitness book last June and it said to take Selenium for it's antioxidant affect, and how it works well against ridding Mercury from your body.
So if these Fish oils I have aren't the purest thing in the world, would taking the Selenium pills be beneficial for me then...or not really have an affect?

I take a lot of fish oil and its very benificial for my health. One of the not usualy reported benifits I have noticed is that it keeps me warm as well as helping me to burn body fat and of course its realy good for my skin. It's good for your heart too but I'm not sure how I notice that.

Anyway I'm hyper-sensitive to mercury and even a small amount of whole fish will adversly effect me and I used to avoid fish oil for this reason but since starting fish oil I haven't noticed any ill effects from mercury.

I do take selinium daily as well. I'm not sure how this fits in with mercury but be careful not to take too much selenium.

Regards, Anthony

I would try to find a more reputable brand of fish oils. I would say that antioxidants are not understood very well, and while selenium offers protective effects, it's probably only for something specific.

Do you not eat any fish? There are also plant sources of omega 3's. It's important to realize that they will be most effective if you have an appropriate omega 6: omega 3 ratio as they share an enzyme.

I understand the ratio deal, and I don't think the brand is super at all. I did some research and read that Selenium helps transport Mercury out of the system, not technically destroy it.
I'm a big albacore tuna fish eater, and frequent sushi eater consuming mainly crab and eel. I just hope those fish oils I take won't do anything bad.

I've been taking fish oil supplements for almost a year now and have noticed an improvement in my general health. I wouldn't worry about mercury. The whole mercury scare in regards to eating fish, any sort of fish, is junk science based on one very limited, very flawed study. Fish oils are good for you. And selenium is something your body needs.

What brand is it? If you have any doubts don't take it. You can probably get a very good fish oil online for $15 per 120 or so. Mercury tested, pharmaceutical grade, etc. There are junk supplements out there. I'd pitch that bottle and get a known good brand at a health store. Good brands are Nordic Naturals, Source Naturals, Carlson, Barleans. Good stuff!!

I don't take fish oil caps anymore - they give you fishy burps. Try carlson's lemon flavored fish oil. Tastes very nice and easy to get down. I throw it in my shakes, make salad dressings with it - whatever. It's a bargain compared to swallowing 40 pills a day.
