Treadmill or Trainer
My treadmill just broke down and the repair bill could be around $400. I am trying to decide whether to fix it or buy a bike trainer which would cost about the same. What would give me a better overall workout during the winter months--a bike trainer or treadmill (I don't jog, just walk quickly). I realize each focuses on different things but since I can't afford to do both.....
And how about the spinning videos?

For a stationary trainer, you'd spend about 1/2 your $400
for a Kirk Kinetic, Cyclops Fluid etc. There are more expensive
units with computer interfaces but unless you are training
for racing, why bother?
Tapes of spinervals etc. will bring you closer to the $400 but
still cheaper (and you don't have to buy them all at one time).
Personally I'd say the trainer would give a better workout
than a treadmill - As long as you use it.
And thats the problem with alot of trainers, they end up
collecting dust or as clothing racks.

If you want to be a quicker/stronger cyclist then get the trainer, however if you want to be fitter generally, then get the treadmill.
Personally I would get the trainer simply because I don't mind running in all weathers, day or night. Riding in the wet and cold is a different matter (for me) so on these types of days I would use a trainer.
Good luck on your decision, Portent.

This one place where close perusal of the want ads in the paper might help.
Lots of people buy these things with great intentions only to have the machine end up covered with dust in the basement or garage. They are offered at good prices and cash in hand lowball will frequently succeed. You might find you can get both for the price of one. Steve

Fortunately, you don't have to be a Clydesdale to use them
However, I do qualify for that unique designation
