1upUSA vs. Blackburn Trakstand Ultra trainers

Yes, there are tons of trainer threads, but I'd love to hear more directly comparing these two.

    First off, cost:

    1upUSA - $300 shipped
Trakstand - $260 after applicable discounts and tax from Performance Bike

    Warranty:

    1upUSA - lifetime
Trakstand - 5 year from Blackburn, but I'm not sure what concessions Performance makes with their 100% satisfaction guarantee?

Anyway, a trainer is a large investment for me so I'd prefer to make the right choice from the start! The resistance units on each obviously have the same design, but MTBR and RBR reviews seem to indicate that current 1upUSA trainers might have a revised design that doesn't fluctuate in resistance as much. Maybe better quality control?

The way the bikes are mounted is different on each, the Trakstand screws on while the 1upUSA has that foot lever.

Any recommendations as to which one I should get?

I have the 1UpUSA trainer, works well, I bought it a couple of years ago and haven't noticed any resistance problems. It's built like a rock, very nice metal work on the aluminum.

I looked at the Kurt Kinetic at the same time (was the other highly rated trainers on MTBR/RBR/etc ...), but decided I didn't want a fluid one (even though the Kurt didn't seem to have any issues with leaks). The 1Up can be adjusted for tension, but you have to partially disassemble it and move/add/remove ball bearings to do that. I just set it up once and haven't ever worried about it.

Can't comment on the other ...

    Hope this helps ...

    My 1-up is a pyle of $h!t

When I first recieved my 1-up it worked great. Then after a few sessions the resistance started to become variable, not too bad. So I e-mailed them and they promptly responded with the fix, which I completed. Not too hard just disasimble and do some minor sanding. The fix worked for a while (couple of days) but soon begain to act up. Fast forward to now about 6 months. The power can be so variable that sometimes I can spin at about 50 Watts and a second later be spinning at 140 Watts with no gear change! Then back. But it is sticking exteamly bad, now, so low wattage workouts have become extreamly frustrating, In fact I don't use it anymore. I e-mail them last week and have not been respondid to. I'm wondering if Blackburn bought them out and 1-up is no longer doing business? I am open to suggestions if any one can help, Please feel free.

For what ever my two cents is worth I would run from that design, and stick with something a little more proven.

    New one on the way.

I got a hold of someone, which wasn't hard. I called a toll free number no e-mail this time.
Bam! a new one is on the way, today! just like that.
Now i feel kind of bad about the recomendation above, but time will tell if it's as good as everyone says they are.
    More on this later.

I have the 1up and have been very happy with it. I use it during the winter just to stay somewhat fit and cut a few pounds. I probably don't ride it as hard as you but I have a hard time believing I could break this thing.

    Good luck
