Whey and Coffee

Will adding a scoop of whey to steaming hot coffee ruin the integrity of the protein? This might sound ridiculous, but I know some chemicals start breaking down at even mildly high temps.

umm it will render it all to generic gelatinous glop...it will break the chains in a lot of them turning them into not so fancy goo. proteins are big molecules. you will lose a lot of the benefit of the maker engineering the stuff

better to mix with cold water like it says on the directions

Yeah, hot doesn't work. I thought I would be a genius and tried adding it to some hot chocolate after a ride last winter. It was like brown wallpaper paste.

I’m pretty sure your whey protein has already been heated significantly during processing so it’s doubtful it would do much to it. Even if it did denature/damage some of the proteins it won’t damage the amino acids, which is what you are going for. Your body digests the cow proteins into the constituent amino acids in order to make human proteins.

It’s no more radical of an idea than cooking a steak, frying an egg… or adding milk to hot coffee. But it might not taste good anymore.

I've put whey in pancakes and muffins (whey package suggestion) and they turned out fine, despite being cooked and all.

It will most definately ruin the taste of the coffee, regardless of how the protein fares.

Why would you do that to coffee?

If you really need protein in the morning, get it from food.

I discovered EAS chocolate whey tastes excellent. huge bag of it at Costco is pretty cheap.
