Green Tea
couldn't find any threads specifically devoted to green tea.
anyone drink it every day? anyone notice an effect on their metabolism, appetite, or cycling? i'm not talking one cup a day as that is not going to do a whole lot, but 4+.
for me, i notice it kills my apetite and gives me a nice buzz without the jitteriness of coffee. also makes me feel a bit more clear headed and healthy, if such a thing can be perceived objectively .

It appears to have a lot of good properties, for instance:
1. Weight loss promotion: https://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/70/6/1040
2. HIV risk reduction: https://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6502399.stm
3. Stress relief: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/media/library/tea
So yeah...it's good stuff Not the panacea some make it out to be, but it does have some benefits.

What kind of green tea do you drink?
I'm sure not Starbucks green tea, but do you get your tea from somewhere special so it is of better quality?

I both drink green tea and take green tea pills 3 times a day (2 pills each time). I don't *know* that it does me any good, but I like the things it's supposed to do and my doctor said they surely aren't hurting me.

White tea is the ticket - where have you been? I drink 2-12 oz cups each afternoon. I buy Rishi tea at Whole Foods and use an Ingenuitea brewer. Works a charm. https://www.adagio.com/teaware/ingenuiTEA_teapot.html

I have been drinking several cups of green tea for about ten years after a bad stomach upset with coffee. The list of things it is supposed to do for you is impressive. When I told my eye doctor about leaving coffee for green tea, he said, "You'll never have cancer." I have not noticed any help in appetite control or weight loss.

While it obviously an exaggeration, statistically there is a huge reduction in cancer rates among green tea drinkers. Green tea's properties were actually discovered by a researcher seeking to find out why stomach cancer rates were dramatically lower in a particular region of China. He traveled there and found that everybody there had similar diets to most other Chinese but the main difference was that they regularly drank 4-6 cups of green tea a day.
The benefits of green tea are numerous and have been shown to have an effect on cancer, weigthloss, and even appears to function as an anti-biotic for some bacterias.
Personally, I drink at least 2 cups of green tea a day with my favorite being the Yogi tea Super Antioxidant Green-Tea.

Protects against Death from All Causes, Especially Cardiovascular Disease
In August 2006, a European study, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that tea is a healthier choice than almost any beverage, including pure water, because tea not only rehydrates as well as water, but provides a rich supply of polyhenols protective against heart disease.
Now, a Japanese study published in the September 2006 issue of JAMA, suggests that drinking green tea lowers risk of death due to all causes, including cardiovascular disease.
Shinichi Kuriyama, M.D., Ph.D., of the Tohoku University School of Public Policy, Sendai, Japan, and colleagues examined the association between green tea consumption and death due to all causes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer.
The study, which began in 1994, followed 40,530 adults, ranging in age from 40 to 79, in northeastern Japan for up to 11 years. Within this region, 80% of the population drinks green tea with more than half consuming at least 3 cups a day.
Compared with participants who consumed less than 1 cup of green tea per day, those drinking 5 or more cups a day had a significantly lower risk of death from all causes and, specifically, risk of death from CVD, with women receiving even stronger protection than men:
Green Tea Benefits
In Women In Men
23% lower risk of dying from any cause 12% lower risk of dying from any cause
31% lower risk of dying from CVD 22% lower risk of dying from CVD
62% lower risk of dying from stroke 42% lower risk of dying from stroke
Only weak or neutral relationships were seen between black tea or oolong tea and all-cause or CVD mortality.
While this study found no cancer-preventive benefit from drinking green tea, other large studies, including a meta-analysis of 13 studies published July 2006 in Carcinogenesis (Sun CL et al), suggest that green tea reduces risk of breast cancer. In this study, compared to women who did not drink green tea, those consuming the most green tea were 22% less likely to develop breast cancer.
Often in studies, the effects of a certain health-promoting behavior are likely to be confounded by the fact that those who try to follow a healthy lifestyle practice a variety of healthy habits. In this study, however, since green tea is the most commonly consumed beverage in Japan, it is unlikely that study participants were choosing to drink green tea primarily for their health, and thus also unlikely that the significant drop in risk of death due to all causes and CVD was due to other habits related to health consciousness.
Given the significant benefit green tea can provide, even to those who are not especially health conscious, just imagine its health-protective potential as part of your healthy way of eating! If you simply cannot start your day without a cup of coffee, try enjoying a cup of green tea at your mid-morning break, with lunch or as an afternoon pick-me-up. You'll quickly discover green tea's irresistible combination of invigorating and calming qualities, plus its delicious flavor, make it one of your favorite healthy habits.

Not very likely seeing as it's prone to oxidation and overly processed when bottled (plus too much sugar, negating some of the insulin sensitizing / anti-diabetic effects). Same with powdered, but than again Matcha Green Tea is powdered and supposed to be healthy as hell because it retains the entirety of the tea leaf as opposed to just the water-soluble aspects that are infused when you make tea. My concern with most American powdered green teas would be that they're letting it oxidize or using inferior tea. If it's organic and well sealed, maybe that's not an issue.

Only drink iced tea here, but when I do, it's green tea. Otherwise, coffee.

Matcha tea powder is the highest concentration of antioxidants of any product currently known. But you only have 1/2 a teaspoon per serving. Its also equal to about 10-20 cups of regular green tea per serving. So if you want green tea for its health benefits, just go straight to matcha and skip the green tea bags.

There's evidence to show that white tea has more beneficial antioxidants than green. With that said, I drink about 4 cups of green tea per day. ~1.5 cups of coffee worth of caffeine.

For 35 years I drank coffee in moderate amounts. One day I had a real bad morning with lots of stomach pains until I vomited rather violently. The doctor I saw said it was not due to the coffee, but I had a strong suspicion it was. I quit drinking coffee immediately and began drinking green tea. I have never missed the coffee. I buy and use far fewer antacid tablets since. All the time I thought I just had a touchy stomach. But, there was a definite correlation between coffee and my occasional acid stomach aches, which often resulted in about three less than fun trips to the bathroom. Since green tea those things are just a memory.

the thing is, back when i was into researching superfoods and nutrition, i'd see this claim on a different food almost every day, depending on who was marketing it. first it'd be kale and blueberries, than goji or acai berries, than wheatgrass, than whatever else...
now i just stick to eating fruits and vegetables every day and not necessarily worrying where they stack up on the ORAC scale.
now i just stick to eating fruits and vegetables every day and not necessarily worrying where they stack up on the ORAC scale.
I dont drink matcha for its rating on the orac scale either. Its also why i mention its value for antioxidants is skewed, since although it has the highest density of antioxidents, you dont sit down and have a cup worth like you might with blueberries, but only have 1/2 a teaspoon per serving.
I drink it every day because I like it, just like I cycle everyday too, not because of its rating on some scale, but because I like it
