Have you looked at Sports Instruments?

I used to be a big opponent of Timex, but I have to say, their newer hrm are more user friendly, and with the advent of their Body Link system and GPS unit, it does make life a lot easier to train with when you've got the full functioning unit. And the digital monitor has a lot less cross talk than the other monitors out there.

There's a website I can send you to that does side by side comparisons of different monitors that also gives a discount. Let me find the discount code and give that out with the website later today.

I'm not sure if this fits the bill, but a Canadian company called Mio make a hrm watch that is not dependent on a chest strap. It has two buttons that you press and the HRM is accurate. If you want a continuous display then it will have a limited appeal to you. I've been using a Mio for about 18 months now, mostly at the gym but it also serves as a watch, has a calorie counting facility and I'm actually very pleased with it.
