Glucosamine & Chondroitin

Got some Glucosamine & Chondroitin for my creaky knees. How long does it take to kick in?

You may want to look into MSM/Hylauronic acid also, and maybe Stinging Nettle.

I don't see the point to chondroiten. It is important that the glucosamine be glucosamine sulfate.

For me, glucosamine did nothing for me. With chondroitin it worked wonders. I had to stop because I could not take the nausea, it was horrible, which is too bad because it allowed me to jog again which I have not been able to do in years.

I've found a bigger difference between brands than formulas. Two different Glucosamine products from Schiff got rid of the odd, non-specific ache in my knees after hard rides.

A Costco house brand brought it right back.

I think it's one of those things that varies considerably with individual chemistry. So something might work for you. That same thing might not work for someone else.

both these supplements are of dubious benefit.

Save your money and spend it on new kit, new chain, copy of Ride magazine, etc. etc...

The results are pretty clear for me. The science tends to support that conclusion (some products work for some people). No one seems to be able to explain why just yet.

I read somewhere a while back that stomach acids pretty much destroy glucosamine. I've not found any benefit. Don't know about chondroitin, tho.
I take a double dose of fish oil twice a day. I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that it works. (At least for me)

And no doubt there are those who claim fish oil gives little more than a placebo effect.

So who are you going to believe - the message your body gives or what others say?

I'm convinced of the following:

1) For the most part, supplements have responders and non-responders.

2) If a supplement has no known ill effects, is cost efficient, AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF YOUR LIFE, why not give it an honest shot? (I'm not going to wait 20+ years for the "experts" to confirm or deny.)

3) If something works, don't agonize over why it won't help others. Be grateful instead.

4) If something doesn't work, don't agonize over why it does help others. Look for other options instead.

Don't believe everything you read.

Glucosamine oral bioavailability and plasma pharmacokinetics after increasing doses of crystalline glucosamine sulfate in man.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1...ubmed_RVDocSum
Glucosamine was rapidly absorbed after oral administration and its pharmacokinetics were linear in the dose range 750-1,500 mg

Pharmacokinetics of glucosamine in man.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8...ubmed_RVDocSum
After oral administration a proportion close to 90% of glucosamine sulfate is absorbed.
