Knee Hyperextending

I've recently noticed a disturbing trend in my left knee. Several times now, in the last month or so, it has hyperextended (albeit very slightly) while standing or walking. All told it's probably happened about six times and is only mildly painful, like a bruise. I haven't been riding regularly since November and wonder if it's because of ligament weakening or possible cartilage damage (I've been lifting and playing racquetball but can't recall an event that might have injured it). I've just resumed my riding and it seems ok while on the bike. Can anyone shed some light on the possible causes and remedies?

Thanks as always.

I had the same problem before I started biking. I used to hyperextend my left knee on a regular basis. After a year of biking and building up my quads, it finally stopped. Why it happened, I have no clue. But the biking helped.
