Allright I know that everybody has good days and bad days, but totally confused as to how one day I could be so much stronger than the next. I've tried to monitor what I ate the night before when I get in this zone, but can't figure out what might be different. Yesturday I got up at 6:00 am and took off on one of my Saturday mourning rides. I didn't eat a thing, but I took one gel pack with me to consume about half way. I was shooting for 40 miles and actually did about 37. There were a couple of stiff 15% grades along with the usual rolling terrain that I encounter on any route right by the house. Most days I can climb the steep grades, but I get quite winded. Yesturday was one of those days where I seemed to go up the climbs with a lot less effort. The hardest climb I encounter is the one coming back into the nieghborhood. It is a good test of how much I've got left at the end of any ride that starts at my house. I can usually stand up and take it slow and make it without zig zagging. Some days I have to zig zag the whole way up, but yesturday even after 35+ miles I just rode right up without any trouble. I felt as though I could of rode another 30 miles. It's almost like it's a blood sugar thing. I do have a touch of high blood pressure, but I don't take anything for it. I'm hyper person anyway. I will get this feeling on longer rides sometimes at the 40 mile mark where my breathing suddenly gets more relaxed and my energy level is actually higher than it was at 10 miles. It's almost like I doped (not that I would know what that feels like). It would be nice if I could find a way to get in this zone more often.
Well I suggest that you first eat breakfest for those early morning rides. You need to get some calories in your system to burn during the ride. So if you just wake up and go you could run into problems such as bonking even if you have a gel pack. That said you could say you had a great ride that morning without eating a thing, but image how much better it would be if you had something in your system?
But everyone really has their ups and down days. You need to make sure you get food into your system before rides to ensure you have enough energy to burn in your system. Some people have the ability to just go ride without problems but personally I think its better to have something in you instead of on you.
Along with that its very possible to feel like 10 miles out on a ride that you had more energy then you started. That is basically your system waking up and getting everything going so you are working more efficient. Also it takes an average of 30 minutes for your brain to become fully functional after waking. Personally it take me about an hour to get my legs awake enough to get onto the bike and do some serious work. After that it takes a 2 to 3 miles for my legs to get everything going on the bike and really open it up.
It is some what of a game you play with your system. Their are so many factors that go into how your system will respond on rides and some you just have to go along with. Energy is a large part of the game cause you need some to be able to burn it off, if none is their u can just bonk. Best thing I can recommend is just to watch what you eat, when you do, and your general feeling on your body. Their are just going to be days that your off, and days that your on.
I do think it's an energy thing, but it's a mystery to me how on an afternoon ride where I had very little sleep the night before and ate a big fatty lunch I suddenly feel like Hercules during the ride. Other days I'll eat the right stuff and feel completely rested and just die trying to climb back to the house. I guess I figured some BF bike wizzard will log on and tell me what the secret is to starting every ride with my best legs.
