soda vs. diet soda

so what's the deal - i know that regular soda isn't great since you're just consuming empty calories, but is diet soda really bad for you? it doesn't have any sugar or calories, and if one needs the pickup associated with the caffiene isn't it better than coffee?

for all you folks across the county, soda = pop = coke

thanks.

do a Google search on "aspartame" or "phenylalanine", or check out these sites:

www.holisticmed.com/aspartame/

http://aspartamekills.com/

I haven't checked out the science, but if you've got a choice........

I think I read somewhere to get the full bad effects of aspartame you need to drink somewhere in the neighborhood of 54 cans of soda... and at that rate, your kidneys will give you before the aspartame gets to you...

as far as the original question... no calories, no sugar... better that regular soda... still not great for you.. the phosphorus (sp) in the soda eats away at your bones... but in moderation it is probably ok.. I generally drink about 2 diet sodas a day... not too extreme at all

It's chock full of chemicals. Maybe one a day isn't BAD for you, but what GOOD is it doing for your body?

Aspartame can also cause neurological damage -- seizures

Being diabetic, diet pop is one of the only indulgances(sp) I have for a sweet treat!
My rule of thumb is, drink water, then drink some more water. But when my sweet tooth acts up, I have a diet Pepsi Vanilla! YUMMIE! You need to figure out what your training goals are and how drinking pop instead of water will help you achieve your goal.

I asked both my family doctor and my urologist about diet soda and both said they could care less if I drink it. Same for coffee; both said to quit worrying about it.

I stopped drinking caffine and almost all diet pops in Feb. I haven't missed it one bit. I don't know for sure if it hurts anyone or not, but I know my blood preasure is lower now. I think it is because I don't get as excitable with out the caffine.

In addition to cycling I love golf.. There is a nice trick in golf to get rid of a gunmetal finish on a golf club or putter is to soak in coke or diet coke for 1 hour.. Yes 1 hour in coke will strip a metal club of its finish.. I know this to be true because I have done it, so what is this stuff doing to us...

Below is a funny (& long) post form a recent coke/water debate from a different mountainbike board -

1) coke may be used to clean blood off the road, battery terminals, etc... but did you know that water is a far more corrosive substance? so corrosive infact that it is commonly known as the universal solvent! it will dissolve ALL salts, ionically bonded matter, and all polar molecules faster and more completely than any substance in the known universe! this is the reason that EVERY CLOTHES AND DISHWASHER IN THE UNITED STATES uses water, and has done for over ONE HUNDRED YEARS!!!!! If you leave a tooth in distilled water it will be weakened into a soft gelatinous blob!!!!

2) water is an extremely viscous oxidizer. it literally RIPS the electrons off atoms of iron, steel, and other common metals which are used to make LIFE SAVING EQUIPMENT such as kidney dialysis machines and school busses which carry young children on highways! water can rust these materials causing them to degrade and loose their structural strength! in enclosed spaces, such as the holds of ships and storage tanks this process literally SUCKS THE BREATHABLE OXYGEN out of the air and hundreds of people are KILLED from asphyxia while working under such conditions! If you leave an ungalvinized nail (like the ones used to build hospitals and elementary schools) in water it will rust in a matter of hours!

3) the pH of distilled water is a shocking 7.0!!!! this is ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND times more alkali than your stomach! the effect of pouring a highly alkali fluid into a container with a solution with a lower pH is so dangerous that EVERY UNIVERSITY CHEMISTRY LAB IN THE UNITED STATES SPECIFICALLY WARNS AGAINST IT!!! students are taught the rime "do as you oughtt'a / add acid to watta" to remind them always to add the LOW pH solution to the HIGH pH solution, and NEVER the other way around! failure to observe this rule results in a HIGHLY EXERGONIC PHYSICAL EFFECT which can cause burns, maim and even KILL! should these same students now believe that adding a HIGH pH solution such as water to a LOW pH environment such as their stomachs could be safe????

4) emersion in water accounts for HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DEATHS WORLDWIDE every year! water enters the mouths and noses of its victims making it IMPOSSIBLE FOR THEM TO BREATHE! even if this deadly substance can be kept out of the airways of the unfortunate victims they are likely to die because water conducts heat away from the body FOUR TIMES faster than air making it possible to DIE OF HYPOTHERMIA when immersed in water as 'warm' as 'room temperature' in a matter of minutes. this was the method the NAZIS used to kill hundreds of CONCENTRATION CAMP VICTIMS during the 1930's and 40's. it should also be noted that EVERY SINGLE DEATH aboard the Titanic was due to water!!!!

5) Water is the major constituent of BIOHAZARDOUS fluids such a blood and semen which spread DEADLY DISEASES, such as HEPATITIS B and HIV, THE VIRUS WHICH CAUSES AIDS!!!!! MALARIA and DYSENTERY, two diseases which have KILLED more people world wide than smoking, car accidents, guns, airline crashes and AIDS all combined are virtually confined to wet climates where parasites breed in standing water!!!

6) HITLER was composed of more than seventy per cent water!!!

7) so is GORGE W. BUSH!!!!!!!

keep this in mind the next time you reach for a glass of water
WC Fields said "I can't stand water! Fish FUNCTION in it!"

Water is the most fiendish enemy of man ever known! Water currently covers TWO THIRDS of the surface of the earth! Space which could otherwise be used for rainforests or habitat for the endangered Panda! Stop water now before it kills someone you love!!!!

For those of us that dont like coffee, soda is our way to wake up. Soda has been shown to decrease bone density but what are you going to do?

I drink regular Coke every morning because I could use the calories. If I drink later in the day its the diet variety.

I think that anyone who is serious about their well being and fitness does (or should not) not drink coke or smoke.

In response to miamijim, why not wake up to a nice ICED shower followed by a bowl of Oatmeal?

A drummer I played with in the 80s dated a chemist who worked for Searle (sp?) who were the peoplewho came up with nutrisweet. She would use the stuff because she knew what went in it. I think it is like turpintine extracts or something.

Well, I usually just drink a diet soda when I am having a hankering for one. Usually like once a month I will buy a diet vanilla coke or something. And I usually don't even finish it. Just drink looooots of water
