    Slow Economy=Fast Cyclists in 2009

There is an interesting article in the beginning of the Bicycle magazine that talks about how many of us are not working very much or have lost our jobs and that is giving us more time to ride our bikes. More time on the bike for most people means that they are looking for their fastest season of racing ever. Like many people this economy has me stressed. My escape and release of stress is the bike. I am, like the article mentioned, looking for my best year ever in Mountain bike racing.

In the article they also are advertising purchasing a new road bike, which I have no plans of doing.

Is the article relevant to your lifestyle as well right now?

A long-time bicycle retail sales manager I spoke with seems to think bicycle sales go could either way depending on the demographics of differing areas. But the one area he seemed to be sure of was "US-based" touring.

He seemed quite sure that there was going to be a big decline in overseas vacationing and that some of that recreational/travel business will show up in the US, including bicycle touring.

I'll take a "who knows" position. Obviously, there are people adjusting their activities, and their priorities all over the nation.

I've been "between jobs" for a few weeks but should land a new job soon. I'm spending 10 hours a week cycling and about 30 hours a week job searching. I'll be in good riding form by the time I start work again and hope to double my bike riding miles this year over what I rode last year.

A guy on my team was furloughed every other Friday (he's a state employee) and was putting it to good use by getting in monster miles on those days. I'm looking forward to him having a good leadout.

I've been very busy. Competitor (there are really only two of us in the national market) is going downhill and we are getting a lot of new orders. The poor economy is also lowering many of our costs.
