Running--> Injury --> Cycling

I have just started taking up some running to add to my exercise, as alot of people have done, I have injured myself running. Too hard, too fast.. I have been suffering from some left achilles tendonitis.

I'm wondering, would cycling affect this injury in a negative manner? I just don't want to lose my aerobic capacity. I'm planning on running a marathon later this year. And my goal next year is a triathlon.

Would cycling be bad for achilles tendonitis?

Cheers,
Chris

Bikes: Specialized Tarmac Expert, 2002 TREK 520, Schwinn Mesa WINTER BIKE, Huffy Rock Creek 29er, 1970s-era Ross ten speed. All my bikes are highly modified(except the Tarmac) yet functional, and generally look beat to ****. .

I'd say not nearly so bad as continued running.

A/T is a nagging injury, very slow to heal. If you've really put the hurt to those tendons, take care to let them heal before it becomes chronic.

Running is a lot harder on the achilles than cycling though. You can typically ride, but take it easy, and make sure you recover well every time, or it will take forever to heal.

You might want to include some long, slow stretches once the inflammation is gone.

Fun fact: your Achilles tendon reaches 90% maximal strain with each stride while you run. So, if it's sore from running, back off. Take some anti-inflammatories, and let it subside before you start running again, or you'll just lose more training time.

Whether you continue to inflame or heal a tendon is dependent on any stress you put on the tendon. There is no way I know of to predict whether cycling will aggravate the tendon(s) you have damaged.

In general, increasing circulation through activity will speed up healing of a given muscle as long as that muscle is not being stressed during the activity. Carefully monitoring your results on a spin bike with very little load would be one method of "testing" whether cycling would cause you negative results.
