Optimum RPM

I remember reading something years ago where cyclists were tested in to find their optimum RPM in relation to their heart rates, at steady-state tempos. For example, they would hold 25mph (exactly). and change the revs to see which cadence produced the lowest heart rate.

Does anyone have any info?
