Hungry during spin class...normal???

Hi,
I have a question. I want taking a spinning class last night and right in the middle of it I was starving. Is this normal? I ate an orange before class and drank about 40oz throughout the day. I scarfed down a bag of trail mix afterwards then drank some gatorade and I felt better. I really don't want to eat/drink this kind of stuff b/c I am trying to lose around 40/50 pounds. I read somewhere that a hungry feeling may indicate low glycogen levels, if so what do I need to do to raise the levels? I am new to nutrition for training so that's why I have so many questions

Not low glycogen, low blood sugar. You probably can't exercise hard without eating. I find that if my blood sugar goes through the floor, I'm apt to eat too much to bring it back up. I'll eat about 300 calories of mixed carbs/protein/fats 2-3 hours before a spin class. Dinner after. That does it for me.

Hunger can mean that you are starving yourself too much. My nutritionist suggested a 1200-1400 calorie a day diet, and I use a food and exercise log to see what my calorie intake is. Normally I don't get hungry during an exercise because your body should release endorphins, which will curb your appetite, so you may just be starving yourself too much.

I get hungry after exercise, but rarely during. Especially when it is high intensity (like a spin class).

Have something to eat 1.5/2 hours before the class. Doesn't have to be lots, around 150-200 cal should be enough to get you through. Protein powder is great for after. It helps repair muscles, is low in calories & will take the edge off the hunger long enough to get home & make some real food.

you need a drink with a little bit of protein. The protein will give your stomach the feeling of being full, therefore, you won't be hungry. You don't want to much though.

you should eat complex carns way in advance of strenuous workouts, and simple carb immediately before. I like raisins or canned peaches. I guess a snickers bar would be safe too. don't worry it won't make you fat it will get burned right up. fat burning occurs during rest. be sure to rest 48 hrs between working a specific group of muscles - meaning you can't spin for 2 days after spinning today.

I started spinning about 4 months ago, typically i eat a banana about an hour before class. I have never really been hungry during the class but definitely when i get home im pretty hungry. so far i have lost 30 lbs but i am doing more than spin, I swim and run as well plus bike. not really dieting either i eat 3 meals and fruit in between meals, usually a banana or an apple. keep up the work though you will see results, also try to do other stuff than just spin. swimming has done wonders for me. we usually do around 3500 yards in an hour in the pool for a good workout.

actually no, I only started any of this january 6th of this year, I never swam in lanes doing laps in my life but i have always been a strong swimmer growing up. i joined a masters swim group at our ymca here in port orange florida. just so happens our coach is ryan lochte's dad and our group is pretty serious. I really was pushed immediately by swimming with these guys and have made big gains although i am one of the slowest in the group. we do have people like charlie lydecker there though and at one time sara mclarty swam there too. being in daytona beach most of the people are either lifeguards or tri people. we did a really good workout this morning, I feel awesome today, had a great swim

I don't recognize those names, but, wow, it would be fun to watch some high end swimmers.

I've always been comfortable in the water and have known how to swim for a long time, I'm 50. Up until recently my biggest swimming accomplishment was swimming a mile (many different strokes and no time limit) to pass the water entry exam for my college freshman YMCA SCUBA class. I just started this past winter swimming freestyle laps with goggles. I have no instruction. I try to get 500 meters in once or twice a week. It takes me less than 30 minutes, but for scheduling purposes I allow the 1/2 hr. My gym also has a huge hot whirlpool so sometimes I'll get in that for the massage. We have a few jets that are very very powerful.

I do feel amazing after swimming. There must be something about using our upper thorax and and lungs that just pumps us up. It's a workout like no other I've ever experienced. I'm so luck to be able to do a combination during my week of cycling; weight training; running & swimming. I haven't played much racquetball lately due to problems with our flooring, but I like to work that in too when I can. I'm going to swim tomorrow after work, and I'm looking forward to it.
