Heart rate during races
My first races of the spring were last weekend and the weekend before (collegiate TTT, crit, and road race each weekend) and I'm worried my season is already over because my heart rate won't go up anymore.
During the first races, I was able to keep my HR at 175-185, which is comparable to my HR last year over a season of about 2 months. Last weekend, I was barely able to get my HR up to 175 during the races and I averaged 162! Where did I go wrong in my training? Is it not enough base? Or rather not enough intensity training? I want to keep racing through the summer with either races or a hard group ride on weekends.
This is my second year racing and I'm cat 4, hoping to upgrade to 3. Both years, I've done a few cross races, followed by a base period of about six weeks and a threshold/interval period of about a month. How can I save my summer if it seems I'm already cooked after two race weekends?

1) it means you're fatigued. it's really hard to race back to back race weekends, especially if you do a hard day or 2 during the week. get some rest, time off the bike. read up on periodization and block training.
2) ignore your hr during races. just race.

I did 15th the first weekend and then 20th the second weekend out of about 40 each time in the crit. Not enough for upgrade points. Oh well--am taking a rest week this week, I guess.
But I guess the fact is, someone who'd trained enough wouldn't have to take a rest week. So can I use the fact that my heart rate was depressed after only a weekend's worth of racing to improve the way I'm training?
