How do you know when you are riding "too hard"?

Hi

How do you know when you're riding "too hard"?

Do I need HRM?

Sometimes after a ride, my thighs hurt quite a bit and they take about less than a week to stop hurting.

Maybe it's me not getting enough warm-up and training? Only started riding seriously recently.

Thanks for any advise,
Andre

my guess, and it is only my guess, is that you are trying to go too hard, too fast... Are you doing a lot of hills ? maybe ease off the training a bit.. let your body adjust to riding more... and slowly increase ride length and intensity.

I get the same thing when I start running in the off season.. the first few weeks my legs are in constant muscle pain... then one day, the muscle pain goes away and it is fine... it's good pain, but pain nonetheless...

I usse my cyclocomputer for this...once i start losing speed and just cant get it back up, then I know i'm pushing it too hard. Normally I have enough in me to pull off a 50% speed boost for short distances..but if I can't even do that...I've went too far.
